Stupid guidelines....but moving on. Well most forums don't allow nudity, outside of adult ones. The real reasoning behind this is the websites sell advertising. If the company paying to put ads on a server (usually Google) thinks the content is "pornographic" or "extreme" they'll mark it as such and pull the ads. Proboards doesn't want to lose funding (nor does anybody, websites cost money) so they restrict it. It's never been allowed here and any questionable content has proboards sending me a warning to remove "it" without saying what "it" is. Very frustrating. |

There are a number of issues that come up, ranging from user expectation, the revenue model ProBoards is based on (advertising), and more.
In any system that allowed such content onto a ProBoards forum, first and foremost the forum would have to be ad-free. Our primary revenue model is based around advertising so that we can provide our free service to you. Part of doing things this way means that we are subjected to a set of rules dictated by the advertisers, which absolutely includes having no ads displayed with adult content. It is not an option to simply have one section of a forum contain the content and limit that area to ad-free. The other areas of the forum would link to that section, undoubtably posts would be quoted from that area or moved into other areas. The whole forum would have to have no ads.
Secondarily, we have to manage user expectations for such a service. I think what users would expect in such a service is an incremental fee in order to post NSFW content. Something like $5/mo extra for the forum to use such an option (in addition to the fact that it would need to pay for ad-free). This means, on our end, coding up a store purchase process and investing a lot of resources into something that people would want for, I believe, a very cheap price. Development costs would run thousands of dollars on our end.
Next comes questions of what happens when a forum wants to stop paying for ad-free and move back to being a regular forum without NSFW content? We would have to track which forums had NSFW content and which do not. How do we ensure that all the posts on this forum are in compliance with our "SFW" TOS? It can cause us as a company huge problems if a forum moves from NSFW -> SFW and the user didn't clean up all the content properly. Imagine if we lost some of our largest advertisers because a forum had content that we prohibit, and we ourselves let that back online.
If a forum wanted to switch from NSFW to a SFW mode, this would mean our staff would probably need to spend a lot of time reviewing the forum content before it could be switched back to ensure we wouldn't have problems with our advertisers. This would be a huge cost for us, and an unexpected burden if our staff have other priorities when a customer decides they want to make the switch.
There are simply inherent risks for us as a company in offering the ability to have NSFW content on a ProBoards forum, which is why we won't be able to offer it. As I discussed earlier, our pricing model for Forums.net is based around pageviews and allows you the freedom to have that content. At the end of the day, the pricing on Forums.net (even with all the added features) would basically be the same price we could offer you at ProBoards for the same service if we ever built the infrastructure to support it.
