Old news: www.eventhubs.com/news/2013/jan/11/boon-mortal-kombat-9-sold-closer-4-million-units-3-likely-outperformed-vanilla-street-fighter-4/Mortal Kombat 9 sold closer to 4 million units than 3 million, according to NetherRealm Studios' Ed Boon. This would mean Mortal Kombat 9 likely outsold the vanilla release of Street Fighter 4, as according to Capcom's IR page, which was last updated on September 30, 2012 — their 4th entry of the previously long dormant franchise had moved 3.2 million copies to date world wide.
This figure doesn't factor in subsequent updates, like the disc releases of SSF4 and SSF4 AE v2012. The disc version of Super Street Fighter 4 was reported to have sold 2 million copies world wide.
Regardless, this is an impressive feat for the NetherRealm Studios team, and shows that the Mortal Kombat brand still has a lot of staying power. It will be especially interesting to see if their upcoming title, Injustice: Gods Among Us, can buck the trend of sluggish sales with recent fighters, when it's released in April of this year.

MK9 is a fun game, I wonder if it did well because it's more "newb friendly" than SF4?

Mk was never a deep game. It's always been geared towards casuals and the emphasis one story and Gore has been it's slling point. Not trying to knock it, but it is what it is. MK9 was probably one of the better MK too.
TBH, I'm actually more interested in MK10 than SF5.

Ed Boon said "fighting games are too complex nowadays, and should be made easier". It's funny since the new MK is more complex than the old, and old fighters are more complex than the new. SF is becoming more of a letdown honestly.

Capcom elitism, you know how it is. Funny thing is Capcom fans act as if SF is such a deep game despite 4 being dumbed down. I remember NRS trying really hard to get input from the competitive community, they even released frame data.

Capcom elitism, you know how it is. Funny thing is Capcom fans act as if SF is such a deep game despite 4 being dumbed down. I remember NRS trying really hard to get input from the competitive community, they even released frame data. Those people are fanboys, we had some of them here from KMC, Frisky left because I disagreed with him on SF being perfect and he even posted a bunch of stuff that was flat out false. As said well right here: "How do you feel about Netherrealm fighters?" They are ultimately fairly balanced and pretty well put together. They listen to community feedback and make an active effort to keep the games fresh. The way in which normals and strings work makes the games feel a bit "non-traditional" but that should not be a complaint for those with open minds.I also like this comment here. "What do you say to the idea that SF4 is "like Chess, since you have to think more and can't just run in." I disagree. To me there's a difference between smart defense and offense, and dumb defense and offense. SF4 IMO has a lot of "dumb" defense/offense that removes strategy. Thoughts? "This is a common complaint, and exists because you do not have -multiple, meaningful options- coming out of blockstun in SF4. Here's a handy dandy table to show your friends: Offense: Frame advantage V Frame Trap (timing-dependent) - beats normals, throw techs, and jumping V Throw - beats blocking V Block - beats reversal attempts ----- Defense: Frame disadvantage V Block - "beats" frame traps (you are still under pressure) V Throw tech - beats blocking or mis-timed frame traps V Reversal - may beat frame traps or throws or both, depends on character. V Backdash - beats frame traps and throws, but can sometimes be reacted to and might go nowhere depending on character. The aggressor has 3 "categories" of choices to make, and so does the defender (reversals and backdashes accomplish the same thing, avoiding frame traps and throws, but have different results and weaknesses). Each of these takes some practice to master, but the choices are ultimately the same regardless of character. Three choices. Just three. With reversals and backdashing being highly character-dependent and flimsy, especially if your opponent knows how to Option Select. Conclusion: In SF4, -your decisions are made FOR you- if your opponent isn't being incredibly predictable. You have almost no real choices to make, you are simply "picking" from the three categories and so is your opponent. Unless you plan to avoid the close-range game altogether, you are subject to this mixup.

Nobody, but Cyrax is really good too. Really unique playstyle, but I could say the same for most of the cast.

Don't forget full screen zoning with superman via injustice. The arc on that attack is crazy when he does it in the air.
