According to sources close to the situation, YouTube is preparing to acquire the Twitch.TV video streaming service for $1 billion, and both parties have agreed to it, Variety is reporting.
The deal is about to be announced publicly any moment now.
If the deal goes through, this would be the biggest acquisition ever for YouTube, which was itself acquired by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion.
But there is a fair chance it may not, if U.S. regulators are not convinced that the deal isn't anti-competitive, and would not impact the industry negatively.
As both YouTube and Twitch are already leaders in the field, the acquisition might make YouTube too big a player in the online video arena. YouTube expects that the Justice Department will likely challenge the acquisition.
