What do Street Fighter 5's sales numbers actually mean?
It has been well documented that Street Fighter 5 sold 1.4 million copies, but what does this actually mean for the franchise?
To help answer this question, we wanted to take a look at Capcom's recent fighting game history, and the paths other titles have taken.
Exploring the histories of titles like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Street Fighter X Tekken give us a better picture of how SF5 could shape up, or not.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was seen as a disappointment when it first launched back in November 2011, from a sales perspective.
The title sold about 600,000 copies initially, and while there were a number of reasons for this, what followed next was highly unexpected.
UMvC3 ended up doubling that figure coming in at 1.2 million total units moved during its core lifespan over the next couple of years.
It's rare for games to see such a dramatic increase in numbers after the initial launch, but this was a title that took people awhile to warm up to, but once they did, it picked up momentum — and multiple campaigns were attempted to garner additional support.
Alas, none of this came to pass, and UMvC3 has been taken off the market and no further updates to the game will ever see the light of day, but it was a notable moment in FGC history.
Street Fighter X Tekken
Released in March 2012, Street Fighter X Tekken definitely did not enjoy the same longevity of UMvC3.
Capcom got off to a challenging start moving 1.4 million units at launch, after predicting they'd sell 2 million.
Over time, bad publicity, gameplay issues and being dropped almost across the board by the FGC lead to the game's sales never picking up any real steam after launch, and the title currently sits at 1.8 million units moved.
If UMvC3 is an example of how things can go right post launch, SFxT would fall on the other end of the spectrum, only managing to move an additional 400,000 units after the initial release.
So what does this all mean for Street Fighter 5?
These examples give us an idea of how the gaming public could react to Street Fighter 5 over time, and there's also the DLC card to consider as well.
So far, SF5 is holding up well in the tournament scene — much like UMvC3 did — so long term sales are very likely to increase, and do so at a good pace.
On the other hand, SF5's launch was much maligned, just like SFxT. These games actually mirror each other perfectly from a sales perspective, where both were expected to sell 2 million copies and moved 1.4 million units in their initial phase.
The other thing to consider is the DLC approach with SF5, which has never been implemented to this degree in a Capcom fighting game. While other titles have offered various DLC, SF5 was built around this structure from the ground up, creating more of a service instead of just an outright product.
The reality is, as of the time of this writing, SF5 has a lot more in common with UMvC3 than it does SFxT, from an acceptance level in the community. The game has seen record breaking entrants in the FGC, been featured on ESPN2, and the Pro Tour is serving as a backbone to support its infrastructure.
So what does the 1.4 million in sales actually mean for Street Fighter 5? Not a lot.
The bottom line is that like the prior games before it, early success or failure isn't a 100% indicator of how a game will do over time.
Capcom has included enough alternative business models, through their DLC approach, that sales numbers are not a clear indicator of how a title is performing, or not.
While game sales definitely tell part of the tale — they're not telling all of it.
Based on the things we're seeing right now, and general acceptance by the FGC, it's not much of a stretch to predict that Street Fighter 5 will have much more in common with UMvC3 long term than it does with SFxT.
(Just a bit of a note the game actually shipped 1.4 million, which isn't the same as how much it sold thanks to Portal23 from eventhubs)

You should join that tournament Nyu. Heres the thing, I don't own Street Fighter V at all. The last time I've ever played SFV was back at EVO15, after the changes that was done to R. Mika & Cammy I wound up not buying the game all together.

I was wondering if you played it at all since you didn't mention the gameplay.
You said you didn't want to bother uncensoring it with some quick mods? It's available on PC for 40% off right now on Steam if you are interested.

It's available on PC for 40% off right now on Steam if you are interested. Lets just say I didn't play SFV nearly as much compare to Tekken 7. In terms what I've played back at EVO it was fun, the only character I played as was just Ryu he was just SFIV counterpart but with V-Trigger instead. I didn't say anything about bothering to add quick uncensored mod, I just wanted the fellow developer aka Ono himself to be able to include it within the game without worrying about offending some snowflake. Modding is honestly such an easy answer when companies are too concern about their PR too much. If I honestly plan on getting SFV it has to cost somewhere on how much SFXT is for PC 40% or if some else decides to gives Me that game. Plus I got other stuffs I want to get from spending money for Culvers med cups for a sweepstakes to win cash, plus want to support a kickstarter for a Twisted Metal game called Diesel Guns, pre order Valkyrie Drive, & maybe get some DOA5 & Gal Gun DLC content.

Well you are enjoying yourself and that's what's fun. I like modding games period so I can make the game more desirable for me which is common on the PC and one of the reasons play on it. I don't like censorship though so I'm with you on that.
You were a big Twisted Metal fan? Didn't know that. I should make a new Twisted Metal thread then.

I've never mod games even if it was like just for fun like insert costumes, characters, stages, or cars from many games, I enjoy customization in the actual games. I've played plenty of Twisted Metal games from TM3, TM4, Small Brawl, Black, & TM (2012) game. Even had an idea for a car combat game for LBPK which was something I can rarely achieve due to technical reasons.c

It's easy to do nowadays, you can simply put a file in the folder and it's often much better than what the game offers. I'll have to get you into it one of these days.
I know you like Carmageddon so I know it's not a surprise. We'll definitely have to talk about that then.
Did you see my Twisted Carmageddon background? It would likely be up your alley. Not sure what background you're using atm.

Is Latin America in danger of losing their regional representation at Capcom Cup? Capcom further developed their Pro Tour this year by splitting the world into four different regions: North American, Latin America, Europe and Asia. We feel it's fairly safe in assuming that it's implied that one of the big motivators in doing this was to help promote regional diversity in the Capcom Cup Finals. In theory this system is great, as there's an excitement in getting to see how the best from different parts of the world fair against each other, but we're beginning to find that it may not be foolproof. Take a look at the current standings for Latin America: You may have recognized the top two contenders for the Latin American region are United States players EG|Justin Wong and EG|K-Brad. In fact, four USA players as well as France's Melty|Will2Pac are part of the Latin American top eight right now. Is this a problem? If so, what do we do? The top 16 players for each region will participate in a qualifier, only the winner of which will move on to play in the Capcom Cup in December. For Latin America, this means there's a decent chance that we'll see a K-Brad or an EVB|Chris T winning the LA Regional and ultimately sniping the Latin America spot Cap Cup. Is this what we want to have happen? The FGC really isn't established enough on a global scale to start putting regulations on who can and can't attend certain majors. We're growing in big ways, but we still need our events to be as big as possible. It'd be pretty hard to see a scenario where we in North America banned BST|Daigo or RZR|Infiltration from coming to one of our events simply because they're from another region. Both competitors and audiences alike traditionally welcome such players for the sake of competition and event promotion. It's the first time Capcom has implemented regional subdivisions in the Pro Tour, and promotion of cross continental representation in the Capcom Cup is surely welcome by the majority of the FGC. It just may need some fine tuning in the future to ensure that these regions are indeed represented. Perhaps players should be required to identify with one region at the start of the tour based on where they live. They could still be allowed to participate in other regions' events, but would not be included in those regions' unique leader boards. For example, Justin Wong could go and win the Furia Tica Cup in Costa Rica as a North American player, and would get global points for doing so. He would simply not be allowed to appear on the Latin American leader boards so as to ensure the final LA regional bracket would be comprised only of LA players. Source: eventhubs

Heres are bundle of CFN profiles Part 2 of playable characters from eventhubs: Necalli unconsciously corrupts others to become like him and hunt for strong souls - This mysterious warrior detailed in CFN SF5 profile I think most of us who played through Street Fighter 5's story left with more questions than answers regarding Necalli after we were done. However, it doesn't sound like Necalli's role in the Street Fighter universe is necessarily over based on the details noted about him in this profile. Introduction Scary! He thrashes around with movements of wild rage! Does he have some sort of connection to the Satsui no Hado? Basic info Name: Necalli Height: 190cm Weight: 113kg Blood type: Unknown Birthday: 11th of January Country of origin: Unknown Likes: Strong being's souls Dislikes: Man-made things, people Fighting style: Violence fueled by his natural power Profile He moves with the objective of consuming strong people's souls. He corrupts the spirit of those he touches with his ominous aura, and people are affected through just being near him (though this is not something Necalli deliberately causes). Those corrupted by Necalli become like himself, wild beings seeking to consume strong souls. When "the time of the hunt" draws near, he awakens, and moves to where he can sense battles taking place, in order to consume souls. The overwhelming force of Necalli when he consumes an opponent's soul is so jarring that anyone who witnesses it becomes frozen with incredible fear. Normally, he speaks regular languages, though with some difficulty, but once he loses himself, his true strength and horror speak for him. Karin declares herself the winner in advance, Shibasaki is a rising star of the butler world - set of CFN Street Fighter 5 profiles The head of the Kanzuki family, and the person responsible for the Street Fighters gathering in the game's story mode, miss Karin Kanzuki gets her turn for a CFN profile. This profile doesn't just focus on the rich heiress herself, though, but it also delves into her supremely loyal "super butler" Shibasaki. Introduction With the world in grave peril, she judges Shadaloo as an enemy of the Kanzuki family and decides to oppose them. Basic info Name: Karin Kanzuki Height: 162cm Weight: 59kg Blood type: B Birthday: 15th of September Country of origin: Japan Likes: Complete victory Dislikes: People who do not fulfill their duty Fighting style: Kanzuki Style Martial Arts Profile She is a highly prideful, strong female martial artist who declares herself the winner in advance, and at the same time the head of the Kanzuki family corporation which has international prominence. She considers herself an enemy of Shadaloo, and becomes something of a center for the rest of the fighters to gather around, to battle M. Bison. She's very prideful, which can be seen as arrogance from other people's perspective, but she is not an unfeeling person, and will rush to their aid if anyone she truly cares about is in peril. Or, she will send her right-hand-man, the super butler Shibasaki, in her place. Introduction This is the Kanzuki family's super butler, Mr. Shibasaki. His duties range wide, from data analysis to personal assistance of the young lady of the manor. He's also quite the fighter. Basic info Name: Shibasaki Height: 178cm Weight: 75kg Blood type: A Birthday: 7th of May Country of origin: Japan Likes: Black tea, young lady Karin Dislikes: People with poor table manners Profile We also have an image of him in casual-wear. He's drinking black tea. He always acts together with young lady Karin. He's learned countless things from the legendary butler Azam (through correspondence education), and is a rising star of the Butler world. Mika is actually pretty emotional, though her mask may cover it - SF5's female wrestling star detailed in CFN profile Zangief's already been detailed, and here's his ultimate fangirl - none other than the highly energetic Rainbow Mika. If you're aching to learn more about Street Fighter 5's main wrestling gal, look no further. Spoiler alert - she loves Zangief. Introduction Here she is, Miss Rainbow Mika! She's a rookie in the female pro wrestling circuit. Her real name is Mika Nanakawa. Basic info Name: Rainbow Mika Height: 168cm Weight: 70kg Blood type: O Birthday: 15th of March Country of origin: Japan Likes: Zangief's pro wrestling philosophy, beach running, finger pushups, neck bridges Dislikes: Younger people with no manners Fighting style: Pro wrestling Profile A female pro wrestler with strong aspirations, looking up to the teacher of her heart, Zangief. She receives a request from her sponsor, Karin, and stands up against Shadaloo. She speaks in a casual manner, befitting of a gym girl like herself. It might be difficult to tell her facial expressions when she's wearing the mask, but she's actually pretty emotional. The "younger people with no manners" part refers to her first meeting with Ibuki, where they immediately got off on the wrong foot and never managed to see eye to eye, but despite that, they ended up infiltrating Shadaloo's base together. Vega follows his personal philosophy that 'beauty is absolute' - Read the ninjutsu matador's full CFN profile translation here Next up, we're moving back into Street Fighter 2 territory with some Shadaloo goodness... Or evilness, rather. The claw-wielding ninjutsu matador, Vega. Introduction Ooh, finally, one of our four kings. It's Master Vega. His hair is so smooth. Basic info Name: Vega Height: 186cm Weight: 84kg Blood type: O Birthday: 27th of January Country of origin: Spain Likes: Beautiful things, himself, roses Dislikes: Ugly things, blood splatter from his victims Fighting style: Spanish Ninjutsu Profile He has a very personal sense of aesthetics, and is a violent narcissist who adores himself. He fights to search for beauty, and to eliminate ugliness. Within his intelligence, you can also glimpse madness. He uses Spanish Ninjutsu, and is a specialist at attacks from the air. His life philosophy is "beauty is absolute", and notices the connection between Cammy and Decapre, and tries to draw out further beauty from them.

Tossed by an elephant, knocked into a sarcophagus, thrown through a hot dog stand? The very first stage we saw in Street Fighter 5 was the Bustling Side Street, and in this arena are three breakable walls through which characters fly if they are defeated when standing next to them. Curiously no other stages in the game have this feature, at least, not yet. X-Kira, you may recognize the name from a few of the free roam camera videos we recently featured, has stumbled upon what look like stage transitions for a handful of other fighting grounds. They look a bit odd, because the animations are all done on the Bustling Side Street stage, but we can get a good guess of what some of these are. Below is the sequence for Apprentice Ally, which appears to send the defeated opponent into the unforgiving trunk of an elephant: www.eventhubs.com/images/2016/jul/25/elephant/According to X-Kira, these animations have been in the game code since the 1.04a update. We're not sure if and when we'll actually see them implemented into the game, but they'd be a welcomed addition in a later patch. Snag a quick peek at scrapped material from Street Fighter 5 - Vega's rejected costume surfaced on Twitter Every once in awhile, we get a bit of a glimpse into what ends up on the cutting room floor over at Capcom. Street Fighter 5 director Takayuki Nakauyuma posted a tweet yesterday that showed off a pretty sleek-looking trench coat design for Vega. Unfortunately, this alternate design didn't end up making the final cut. Vega - Civilian clothes "He was actually going to change into these clothes at the end of the General Story, originally. "Vega has a pretty thuggish suit, so this is a nice contrast to his." When compared to most of the other costume options Vega's ended up with over the years, the trench coat look is definitely dialed back. More rejected Street Fighter 5 costume designs; Capcom says they could make it into the game if demand is high enough The CFN Portal has decided to release more concept art pieces that show designs of alternate costumes that didn't make the cut. Though these designs were rejected initially, the blog post states that they could still come to fruition if there is enough fan request for them. Our very own MajinTenshinhan was able to fully translate the latest blog, which gives us quick details on each of the rejected designs. Below is just one to get you started, but be sure to hit the jump to see such costumes as bathing suit Alex, casual Zangief, and more. Chun-Li - Panda "She's like a stuffed animal. How cute. We had this in Street Fighter X Tekken, too, you know? Panda costume." Nash - Assassin "Nash is enveloped with an empowering armor. That looks hard... He's also equipped with a sword on his back." R. Mika - Armageddon Yoko "This is nice. She's cosplaying her own demon coach. She just went and took those clothes without asking, so she's going to really get it later..." Zangief - Civilian clothes "He's perfectly prepared for the cold. How cool. He actually seems much weirder now that less skin is exposed..." Alex - Bathing suit "That floating ring looks like it'd be extremely in the way during battle. "... Wait, can Alex not swim? Alex... Please make sure you do your squats to warm up before getting in the water." Source: eventhubs

Ken goes on safari, Birdie dons 'formal' attire and more; another set of rejected costumes surface on the CFN portal Capcom has been sharing some of Street Fighter 5's rejected costume ideas with us through the CFN portal, and recently another batch appeared to put a few different characters in the spotlight. Even though these designs were initially rejected, there is a chance that we could see some of these come to light if there ends up being enough fan demand behind it. Birdie - Formal "This is Birdie when he's attending a party at the Kanzuki manor. Though I guess in the story mode he was more of a bouncer than a guest, huh." Ken - Holiday "This is when Ken went on a vacation with his son, Mel, to look at animals. They didn't go to just a zoo, they went to the actual jungle, you see." Guile - Sheriff "Not quite his usual job. But it reeks of justice! His hat is really extravagant, but it's pretty cool, no?" M. Bison - Pirate "Ooh, this fits him perfectly! What a great smirk. Don't you get more hyped when you see this kind of unexpected cosplay?" Laura - Casual clothes "These clothes were supposed to show up in the general story. This is what she's wearing while traveling across the world." F.A.N.G - Kung-Fu Style "His very charm point, the sleeves, aren't even here, making it a highly unusual costume. But what a pose though, huh?! ... But wait, aren't his hands poisonous?!" "And that about wraps it up! As we said earlier, the costumes outlined here aren't 100% guaranteed to not show up in the future, they still could. If our fans request them enough, they very well could! Until next time!" You know, the other guy who's always eating I mentioned on the Rufus page? Birdie, yeah that was his name! Name: Birdie Height: 201cm Weight: 114kg Blood type: O Birthday: August 22 Origin: UK Likes: Beer, music Dislikes: Children Huh. Looks like he's slimmed down since he left Shadaloo, he used to eat us out of house and home Oh look, I found a pic from way back! Name:Birdie Height: 216cm Weight: 220kg Blood type: O Birthday: August 22 Origin: UK Likes: Beer, beef jerky, talking money Dislikes: Children, police Yeah, that's more like it. He'd always get into trouble with sir F.A.N.G. for wearing an unapproved hat, not to mention his hairstyle. He betrayed us and is apparently with the Kanzuki family now! Today info Name: Birdie Height: 216cm Weight: 230kg Blood type: O Birthday: 22nd of August Country of origin: United Kingdom Likes: Beer, beef jerkey, food Dislikes: Kids, cops, hunger Fighting style: Fighting centered around headbutting and using chains Looks like he's gone back to his "healthy" weight again... He definitely is a great fighter, but he's often led astray by his appetite which clouds his judgement. After he escaped from Shadaloo, he was picked up by Kanzuki head Karin, and spends his days feasting on the Kazuki's fine cuisine. His figure has suffered as a result of his lazy lifestyle. Look at that, I've 3 pictures of Birdy, people must really like him! I heard that shortly after the first pic was taken, he teamed up with none other than the almighty Titanic Tim! He eats a lot and swings his chain around! M. Bison's real motive isn't world domination? The mystery deepens in the CFN Street Fighter 5 profile Now, we have the boss of Shadaloo himself, none other than the mighty M. Bison! Rashid is obsessed with collecting the latest gadgets and various new things - CFN's Street Fighter 5 profile for the story mode's protagonist I'm sure Rashid left an impression on most people who played through Street Fighter 5's story mode, and just in case he didn't, you might want to use this profile to familiarize yourself with the character a bit more. Reports say that over 500 different Twelves exist - Predecessor Eleven and creator Dr. Woo also detailed in Street Fighter 5 CFN profiles Perhaps the strangest character in all of the Street Fighter 3 roster is Twelve, a mysterious experiment subject who can shift the shape of its body in practically any fashion. CFN site shed some more light not only on Twleve, but on its predecessor Eleven and the creator of both - the Gill-affiliated Dr. Woo. Introduction I guess you can imagine just from hearing the name... But it's an earlier verison of THAT character. Apparently, it can transform. Maybe it'll show up sometime? Shadaloo has a bunch of dolls ranked lower than the 12 main ones, and these are named after flowers - CFN profile delves deep into the Dolls One of the latest posts on the CFN site details the various levels of different dolls that are part of Shadaloo - because apparently, it's not just the 12 we're all familiar with. There's a huge amount of female soldiers who aspire to be dolls, and they are divided into three different classes. You can see each of them in the images here, with the leftmost one the lowest rank and the rightmost one the highest rank. The low level dolls appeared in the Pachislot game "Leave it to Chun-Li" (Does anyone even know what that is... ?) The intermediate and high level Dolls are pretty combat-oriented, so they tend to be out on the battlefield. High lvel Dolls are actually higher ranked than High level Shadaloo soldiers! They have names from signature flowers of the country they're from. such as Löwenzahn. Source: eventhubs

Street Fighter 5 penalizes player when server disconnects before match; takes 1,000 LP and serves with 24 hour ban
Another example of this rage quit punishment bug occurring has been added to our story in which a player's match fails to load, though they remain connected to the server.
There has been a lot of talk recently of players being wrongfully punished by Street Fighter 5's new system that aims to deal with rage quitters. A number of reports have claimed that points have been deducted and a ban has been served to players who were the victims of rage quits -- not the offender -- but we haven't seen any concrete proof of this happening.
Seimo Godios has uploaded footage showing a 24 hour ban and the loss of 1,000 LP when the server disconnects before a casual match starts.
As we see in the video, Street Fighter 5 considers the pre-fight and post-fight screen as actually being in a match. When the server disconnects, the player attempts to log back in. After a couple of tries, the login is successful, but they are served with the new rage quit punishment.
This is the first time we have seen actual footage of something like this happening, and though it wasn't a traditional rage quit, we now see that the system can indeed punish players when they haven't actually quit a match early.

CFN Portal Reveals Concept Art for Superhero Costumes in Street Fighter V Someone at the CFN Portal must have put out the Hadouken symbol, as the latest offering of concept art shows off various Street Fighter characters dressed up as tokusatsu-style superheroes. These designs look like something out of Viewtiful Joe or the Wonderful 101, with characters sporting colourful spandex and glowing appendages to make them look that little bit more spectacular, compared to the last batch of rejected costumes. In the gallery below, you’ll see: Ryu wearing special gauntlets and visor, similar to Cyclops from X-Men; Atomic Hurricane Guile, complete with Sonic Boom logo; a hooded R. Mika, complete with bright pink pigtails; Karin wearing a suit similar to that of Iron Man; M. Bison doing his best Black Shadow impression; Star Captain Birdie and finally, Dhalsim wearing a UFO as a skirt, complete with aliens grasping his body. Street Fighter 5 player hit with rage quit penalty after restarting game from Training Mode; Capcom steps in to fix You may know SoCal's Jeremy "Vicious" Lopez for his regular Wednesday Night Fights appearances both as a strong player and colorful commentator. While streaming a Street Fighter 5 session recently, Vicious ran into some interesting issues with Capcom's new rage quit penalization system. The SoCal player was having issues with lag as he streamed, and so he restarted his game a few times. These restarts were not performed during any online matches, but were performed post match on the Main Menu and in Training Mode. Vicious was still hit with a 1,000 LP dock and was banned from the SF5 servers for a 24 hour period. You'll see a clip of it all happening below. xhttps://clips.twitch.tv/sfv_vicious/CleverGoosePunchTrees In speaking to Vicious afterwards we found that he submitted a ticket to Capcom and they restored his account in less than an hour's time. This implies to us that Capcom did not intend for the rage quit punishment system to work like this, and will likely right it in the near future. If such happenings are occurring while you play, you too can reach out to Capcom at Capcom Unity's support page to get things fixed. www.capcom-unity.com/go/capcom/supportSource: eventhubs

It's crazy they haven't gotten the netcode under control.
It's also crazy that some of the best players won't make it while some lower skilled players will farm easy points from Latin America.
I wonder how they will handle it next year.

Street Fighter 5 bug? You can still slip on Birdie's banana after it disappears We wouldn't go as far as to complain about Birdie as a character, but the Street Fighter 5 bloated brawler does have a bit of an issue with his banana toss V-skill. Apparently said banana can still hit opponents after it has disappeared. We found the sequences below on YP|Filipinoman's Twitter, as they show the SoCal player tripping on Birdie's banana after it seemingly has disappeared. This next one is even worse: A player by the name of Arlieth investigated this further, and has come up with an explanation. Arlieth's exploration into the matter yielded the images below. He explains on hist Twitter that the banana is still actually active for a full 10 frames after it's disappeared. 10 frames of ghost banana is probably not what Capcom was intending here. Now that this information is out, we imagine they'll likely patch this in a future update so that the visuals line up better with active hitboxes. Source: eventhubs

Woah! Someone completely redesigned Street Fighter 5's in-game shop, and it looks amazing Earlier today, DevSF4 uploaded a video walkthrough showing a new user interface for Street Fighter 5's in-game shop. Created by the video uploader, this concept is solely that, a concept, and not something we can expect to see in the actual game. However, that doesn't make it any less impressive. This redesign goes a bit heavier on the visuals, with a large splash menu for characters, costumes, stages, sales, colors, and more. Each sub-menu is surprisingly fleshed out too; this looks like it could be an actual feature. Source: eventhubs
