Only 2 more years until I can go. So how's your Nihongo? I bet you're going through the same. I started studying it last month and heck I thought I was good, I memorized all hiragana in first 9hr of the class. but wait, there's more. there's Kanji. who would be able to memorize that another 22,000+ characters? I don't think I can get even half of them.

ままですけど。 かなは簡単だよ。8日ぐらいに勉強したそれで分かりました。 Kanji isn't difficult once you learn Radicals and Stroke order. The fact that people can hardly learn it within 6 months is good enough reason to call it difficult. 1 kanji character can be called more than 2 sometimes. and you pronounce it differently depends on how it is used. I have very long way to go. I think speaking is far more easier than writing.

English with american accent. that's 3. japanese in progress, basic conversation. You have any tips for me? at least five most used kanji characters. Sensei wants us to memorize 10 a day, but I wish to know the most useful first.

Because Kanji gives meaning to the many homonyms in the language. Kanji really isn't as hard as people make it out to be. Just learn stroke order and radicals. It's the grammar that might be a problem.

The grammar and the existence of particles makes it very different from Indo European languages. People exaggerate the writing because it's not latin, but the writing is the easiest part.

It's hard to explain but english has a fixed word order in that you have to put words a certain way or else the sentence doesn't work. You can't say The pizza John eat or something like that. Japanese has somethings that are fixed [The verb always comes at the end] or the particle "Wa" being at the beginning. But, there's a alot more flexibility and the particles tell you the relationship of the words.

I have been having a friend teach me some Tagalog. I have been contemplating a trip to the Philippines. While I know it's not really necessary to learn to get around and function there, I think it will be amusing to the locals to see a 6'2" white guy that can speak Tagalog.

Tell me what do you think of tagalog. Philippines is just like any other country in Asia, If you're white guy walking down the street, you'll get stares and smiles. but seeing white guy speaks tagalog, that's kind of funny and impressive. If someone laughs at you speaking tagalog, don't get offended, they're just surprised.

I agree with Jack here. there's word order for every sentences that cannot be translated word for word. but I kind of relating to this because my native language uses the same way when translating it to English. like.. John はピザを食べました (John wa piza o tabemashita) If we translate that to english word for word, thats, "John pizza ate" what? but the correct meaning is "John ate pizza" still hard to explain, but you get it.

When I was younger I used to wonder why translated sentences till seemed "weird" but it makes more sense the older I get.
