I'm curious here. I just don't see what makes the game so damn special. I get that "cool looking" FPS games are the rage, but does it have a special *it* factor that I'm not aware of? Is it the marketing? What has it innovated to have such a crazy draw? I remember when Halo was all the rage.
Has anybody here played it or do they have any clue?

The marketing Activision puts toward cod plus in the age group from 5-16 its known to be the game "cool kids" play. I guess you can say its some sort of status symbol among kids. Cod is not that popular on pc though. Many other fps games on pc blow cod out the water in terms of gameplay and popularity I played a good amount of the cod games when steam has the free weekend trials for them but I don't even put 5 hrs into the game before I'm bored with it. Most the guns (from cod mw2 to present) have very little to no recoil so its easier to land shots. Some of the games had death streaks which enabled even the worst players to get kills. The campaign is pretty much follow this arrow, shoot these guys, massive explosion, some sort of plot twist then a long drawn out final showdown and boom credits.

I remember Halo was the same thing a decade or so ago, so it's no surprise. It's crazy how M rated games like CoD, GTA, and MKX have such a huge fanbase. Just shows that Mature doesn't really mean... mature. The marketing definitely plays a role. Plus the money they must get from the military for making them look good. I know they sponsor that stuff as they hope it gets boys to sign on in at 18. Makes perfect sense.

I've actually played some of the single player campaign for call of duty. It's pretty fun, I don't care for the multiplayer though. Same with halo.

Would you say it being "fun" warrants the mass amount of hype and sales it gets? I played a bit of Halo with some kids (surprise) about a decade ago. I mean it was pretty fun, not hard to make a game that's somewhat fun. Just don't think it's as legendary as people make it.

I think it's just the wave of FPS's and hype in general. COD jumped on the multiplayer FPS bandwagon on the right time. I mean Duke did it first, but at the time it wasn't a thing yet. Like most fads, it's usually when the masses get a hold of it that it becomes big otherwise it's out of sight and out of mind.

They just got in at the right place at the right time. What a shame though because Duke Nukem is far, far better.

Duke doesn't pander to the ADD generation same with Quake and other older shooters.

They're definitely right about consoles riding on the coattails of PC trends. It's a fad that needs to die soon. Consoles seem to be losing steam anyways so I guess it's not all bad.

It's because Xbox having architecture similar to a PC making crossover between PC devs and console easy to develop. Notice how many of the popular genre's are originate from PC: FPS', Computer RPG's and so on. Americans got a head start early because they dropped out from the Console Market around the 80's and focused on PC. So, they're more experienced these types of games among other advantages.

Well once consoles had enough power to do it properly it really took off. That's why Halo was so hyped. The PC had great shooters for years that were better than Halo. I liked Timesplitters better anyways. Way more creative and interesting.

Ive only played a few of them. And I only play the solo campaigns. It is pretty cut and dry though. Go here, shoot this.
It's good filler between the games I am really waiting for to come out.

6.5 or 7.
I like being able to sit back and pick off enemies like Thomas Beckett or run around causing things to go boom like John Rambo. If I enjoyed the online campaigns it would probably be higher, since that is what the game is geared towards.

Its not really competitive because the AI doesn't force you to really change tactics. Where a human opponent would, especially a team of them. The single player missions are filled with simple obstacles- Tank, chopper. Both require you to simply find the right weapon. Then just wait for the right moment, usually when the enemy has their back to you. Enemies will always poke their heads up, so just wait to hit them from a distance. There is always ammo lying around so running low is usually not a concern. And if you get hit, simply hide and rest for a few seconds. I just enjoy it as mixing it up and trying a new game. I never really liked the original FPS, so these are somewhat enjoyable.

I'm sure there's at least someone always on if people wanted to compete at least. Many games have problem with a steady population when you play them.

That would suck and be ironic since I hear that games might go back to a more single player focus.
