Some of my favourite fantasy authors:
David Gemmell Stephen King (Dark Tower series, specifically) Terry Goodkind (Sword of Truth, but I recommend you don’t try and read the whole series, just the first three books) Robert Jordan (but dear lord, I wish he did something more with that Wheel of Time series – he had a brilliant idea, and great characters… and then dragged it out, and out, and out – until it eventually just went nowhere) CJ Cherryh Roger Zelazny Terry Pratchett Neil Gaiman
Fantasy authors I don't read as much anymore but still recommend Douglas Hill Anne McCaffrey André Norton RA Salvatore Alan Dean Foster David Eddings
Awesome SciFi authors:
Vernor Vinge Neal Stephenson Peter F. Hamilton William T. Quick Douglas Hill
Detective:
Robert B. Parker
Action:
AJ Quinnell
Animals:
Gerald Durrell
Western:
Louis L'Amour Jack Schaefer
Adventure:
Jack London

Do you mean in a general sense? I like Bryan Jacques, even now that I'm a bit older.

Yeah, just generally - what do you read? SciFi, Fantasy, Adventure? Who are your favourite authors - what books do you have that you have read over and over and over again, and keep on buying for people as presents because you want them to read it as well?
For instance, Richard Bach's Illusions I must have bought four times already, because either I read it until it falls apart or I give it to somebody as a present...

Classic: Nathaniel Hawthorne Oscar Wilde
Jack London Edgar Allen Poe James Whitcomb Riley
Afraid that I'm very inspired by a lot of classic American authors. I sometimes wish it wasn't so but it would take me a while to list all my reasons for it.
Modern: Neil Gaiman Bernard Cornwell Susanna Clarke Elizabeth Kostova
There are patterns there that I think anyone can see. Three of them are British authors and the last two are first time hits. With the last two, I'm not so certain that it's the authors that inspire me or the books that do so. Seeing as the authors are not exceptionally published yet I'll have to assume that it's the books: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and The Historian That truly fascinates me rather than the authors but, if they maintain that level of intensity in their writings then they will very easily remain on my list.

Matt Reilly. If no one has read the Scarecrow series, I recommend them.

Donald Trump as in the rich dude?? So you been trying out new way to earn lots of money. Donald Trump, Robert Kiosaki, Lee Iacocca, and many others. I have my own company, and I'm always looking for investments. Those books just keep your mind in tune and mention new things that come along. I'm all for making money.

This book is similar to the Twilight Zone episode A Most Unusual Camera.
