Controller, thats what i'm more use to/ I am really good with controllers, fightsticks however provide several advantages, especially with more complex games like Street Fighter. They just have a very high learning curve.

Fight Stick. It really depends on preference, but the advantages comin offa the Stick are amazin. Better execution, faster inputs, all the buttons being on the front of the stick, etc...

You also use your hand and wrists vs you thumb. I hate when people say it's just preference. There is a level of preference of course. But sticks have more potential.

Some people are just weird and better without sticks, tho. Look at Fantiq. Dude uses a souped up 360 controller, of all things. But really, if you aint Fanatiq or Enthul, the stick simply has more to offer in the long run. Me, I use the Fight Pads or the sticks, it doesn't really matter. I'm equal with both. But the normal controller? Makes me wanna cry some time.

I have a custom made ps1 controller, that I took apart and rebuilt. It's really light and small with no analog buttons in the way. I'm crazy good with it. However, there's just some things that are easier on stick, much like using a steering wheel for driving games. I've done crazy things with sticks on numerous games, crazy gamestunts with numerous games. But the stick is better suited for several "tricks" some being roll cancelling and p linking for one.
But yeah, you're definitely more welcome to use what you want though.

Here's an interesting article, talking about this very subject. ( shoryuken.com/2011/12/03/introduction-to-competitive-play-pt-1-controllers/ ) Most fighters are designed to a point where playing with a stick gives you much easier access to maximum efficiency. However, there's no reason why you can't reach that same efficiency with any other device that has no glaring draw backs that make certain abilities impossible. Most people will realize that the stick is just easier if they just invest the time because that's the way the games are made. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to preference. If you feel you're good with a pad or controller and you feel comfortable using it, then there's no need to convert to a stick because they both do the same things, just in different ways. If you feel awesome with a pad and you love it, then you're wasting your time trying to learn the stick because you think you'll up your game.

If you feel awesome with a pad and you love it, then you're wasting your time trying to learn the stick because you think you'll up your game. You can definitely use a controller well. The Fightstick has a higher learning curve, but it lets you do things that are just much more difficult on a controller like p-linking, roll cancelling, etc. It's like using a car vs a plane. I have a special custom made controller I made myself for fighting games, small and light weight. The fightstick took time to use, but it was a benefit to having numerous fingers on the front and using your wrist and finger vs your thumb alone, more muscles. It's a lot like using the wheel in Gran Turismo. Harder to use, but it gives you an edge that a controller won't. Or using a mouse vs a controller for shooting games. Another advantage is it preps you for arcade use if you wish to play there. A controller is a standard input device that's for general use and is ok for just about any game, but it isn't as good as a specialized device. That's the gist of it.

I agree, the stick will make things much easier. But it truly is about preference when it comes down to what will better you're game. I remember when MVC2 was first released for the DC and I ruined my stick. All I had at the time was the sub par basic DC controller. I ended up playing the game for months on end with the analog stick, of all things, and ended up getting better with the DC analog stick. Now I can only play MVC2 with the analogs on any controller, better than I can with a stick.
When is gets to a point where you are preforming what you need to do to win, just from muscle memory, it's all the same in the end.

Well yea, if you have more experience with something you'll do better at it. It doesn't mean nobody can do better with a controller, most probably do until they put a lot of time on the stick, but there are inherent advantages. Most people nowadays prefer automatic, but if you are racing with a stick shift you will have advantages. Also, some games don't need a stick. In fact games like Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, etc, don't "need" a stick. Games with simplified controls don't really rely on a stick because they have really easy controls. They can be done with a stick though. It also depends on the level you're playing.

Meh, the stick has a higher learning curve and costs more than what the average person is willing to pay if they aren't die hard. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is just playing for fun, which is like 99% of people. Just like a stick shift, you don't need one much nowadays, but if you're racing, that's different.
