I finally got around to getting one of these babies. I purchased one from the guys at hitbox themselves. I had been looking at getting one, but last year I was mastering the stick, so I put it off until later. I'm glad I did get one as it is the next step up in fighting game controls, and controls in many other games.
I ordered this box from Hitbox Arcade and the shipping was fast. I got it the next day! I immediately went in and practiced. I was able to do my moves right away, but not all of them at anytime off of the back of my head. I started practicing and I saw the benefits from that point. For one thing it is easier on the wrists and hands for long periods of play. This is especially useful to those of you who have injuries or get sore easily. This feels really comfortable. The only thing most will have to work on aside from practicing the rhythm (it's all about a certain feel), would be strengthening their left ring finger, as most people don't use this finger and it is likely the weakest of the main fingers they have.
Execution is much faster and far more accurate, especially when you get accustomed to it. No need to worry about pushing up on accident, or down-back when you simply want down. All of that is eliminated. And since you have a finger for each direction you will actually find yourself doing things fast. This is also assisted by the fact that you have the jump button at the bottom, which once you learn you can use your right thumb for, making tiger knee motions and seismo spam and instant air fireballs cake. This will take some getting used for for many but it is easy. The hitbox is also lightweight and comfortable.
So it is really the next step up in controls. It takes the things about the pad and stick and improve upon them.
The pad is faster in terms of controls, but lacks the buttons on the side. Many people also find it less accurate than stick (though I had a special ps1 pad that was like a miracle).
The fighting pad has the buttons on the side, but the directional pad is worse.
The fight stick has the buttons on the side and is more accurate, but it is also much slower and harder on the wrists as well.
The hitbox has everything operated by a single finger rather than putting it on your thumb or your entire hand. This makes execution faster than you could do otherwise. Imagine doing 3 frame fireballs and dragon punch motions. Also having your hands primed and ready to do them at any time? Yea, it's definitely worth checking out.
Now some people, particularly in the past were complaining about this item saying it is "cheap" or unfair. It IS better, but that's a good thing. We need better, faster, more accurate tools to take the game to the next level. All inputs are done manually, and there is no "blocking in two directions". On the hitbox you have SOCD clearing (SOCD is simultaneous opposing cardinal directions.) Left+right= neutral and down+up= up. This in itself can be used for advanced tricks.
Nonetheless I bought the multiconsole one and I enjoy it. I recommend them to everybody who wants to take it up a notch and/or try something new. It is pricey, but worth it in the long run.
Check it out.
Here are the tutorials on how to use it as well. With some other things.
