Giants are Humanoids of great size and strength. They have been depicted in every culture on Earth in one for or another all possessing various powers. From the simple 12 foot tall Human Savages of England to the Epic Titans of Greese these creatures are the very defintion of Power

jak, could you please read the Introduction I have written and explain a little more about Giants and the types? As I have said, Giants would probably feature more prominently in Folklore but if you point this out and continue from there I'm fine with the discussion

There were Titans in Greek Mythology and there were also Giants. They arent exactly the same, although related.
I guess we are talking about both in this discussion?
Is there going to be posts about specific giants and their ilk, or is this just a blanket discussion about all of them?

The Cyclopes were the sons of Uranus and Gaia, so they were (theoretically) mini-Titans

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. - Genesis (ch. VI, v. 4) [Antiquity]

Another Bible discussion: But are the Nephilim really giants? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since this is not only under Science Forums, but Bible: Accuracy and Inerrancy, I wonder if it has been pointed out that the not everyone interprets Genesis 6 as refering to physical giants. After all, the same people would have us believe that the term "sons of God" (beney ha' elohim in Hebrew) refers to angels, and that these giants were the product of a union between angels and humans. They justify this by passages in Job and Psalms which are very ambiguous, when the term is unambiguously used in Deuteronomy 14:1 and 32:8 to refer to the Israelites. Furthermore in the New Testament, Hebrews 1:5 it claims that God never called an angel His son. I think the most straight-forward interpretation of Genesis 6 is that the sons of Adam and Eve married the daughters of other humans on the earth and that their children were giants among men - great leaders, "mighty men" and "men of reknown". www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=msg&f=1&t=271&m=209

From the same forum: Re: Gibborism. Nephilimism etc... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyways, the mighty men of renown mentioned in Genesis 6. If we really look at who they were in relevance to the traditions of those ancient times, we usually would come to the conclusion they are similar to the heroes of legend like Hercules etc. The Nephilim were the people who are supposed to have been born from the gods and men. Similar to many traditions world-wide. if we look to Enoch for elaboration, enoch calls them giants. they are portrayed as abominations that ravage the earth, slaughtering millions. in response, the angel azazel and a few other teach mankind to make weapons, and it is THAT that prompts god to flood the earth. interesting story, but that's just a reinterpretation from the intertestamental period. www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=msg&f=1&t=271&m=151

Just have to point out that, as interesting as this is, it really should be in the Religion forum. A new thread, perhaps? I'll leave these here as they are relevant, somewhat, to the discussion. But I do think they warrant their own threads.

But I do think they warrant their own threads. Yeah, probably. When I saw "Giants" I remembered that passage from the bible - it fascinated me as a child. It was like a revelation, to me. Everything suddenly made sense. There WERE giants that had walked this earth! And gods, and demi-gods, and angels, and demons and monsters... I was sure that all the Greek and Roman myths were true, that that passage from Genesis had proved they had really existed... Then later I found out life was unfair, I was never gonna get super powers, that superheroes didn't really exist, and that God had created us for Her own sick, twisted amusement. It was kind of a blow to the gut, I'll tell you. Anyways, sorry I got off-topic here, will go post further on the Religion forum if I wanna continue on this topic
