One of my favorite novels of all time, Atlas Shrugged, deals with the morality of the free market vs one of a centrally planned and regulated economy that embraces the redistributive model. In it's pages one of the characters, who is my namesake on this forum, gives a speech in which he succinctly states exactly what must occur in the minds of individuals if the west is ever to recover and prosper again. I would like to share that:
Today government agencies and politicians have taken up the mantle of Robin Hood and are lauded by those on the left and much of the public as champions of the poor and those "in need". Through taxation and an economic regulatory state they steal wealth they did not produce to give to those who did not earn it.
The idea of Robin Hood as a moral paragon must die; and the future of the West depends on it.

The idea of Robin Hood as a moral paragon must die; and the future of the West depends on it. They're seen as a moral paragon because the message they preach appeals to the masses because of the politics of envy. People want to have what other people who surpass them have and the reason it works is because the majority have warped the definition of "good" to mean "altruism". Which is just nonsense. I'm listening to Peter Schiff now talking about Obamacare. It's funny because they like to speak about it "helping people". Yea, it may help a small percentage of losers, leeches, women, very old people, or under the table prostitutes, but what about all of the people it hurts? What about the people who lose their plan? What about the people who are robbed at gunpoint? How come we never focus on the people who are hurt? In this case and ultimately marxism hurts more people than it helps, and it's justified because the few are being sacrificed for the many. It should die indeed.

This is a key point you made. I think it's because in the minds of the "public", need is seen as the standard of virtue and not productive achievement. It's also envy like you said. These do-gooders feel that the people in "need" can't afford not to be helped with your money, while you can afford to be looted and still live to a standard that they themselves define as "acceptable". Greedy people are willing to turn a blind eye on the people that are being robbed and hurt so long as they themselves are not doing the deed.
We know the framers of the constitution read philosophers like Charles de Montesquieu and John Locke extensively when looking for inspiration for their new government. So they knew without a doubt that people with this type of evil ideology existed and will always exist, and tried to construct it in a way to prevent these people from gaining power in government and using the force of law.
Unfortunately it seems they failed and some of the last firewalls in that great document have been breached or outright ignored. Unfortunately I don't see this idea of Robin Hood dying anytime soon..

The only way a free society works is if people are willing to fight for it. These beliefs have to be instilled and they have to thrive and pass on to multiple generations. The problem is big government doesn't just come overnight, people will always resent their betters and will want to take what they have, and glorified welfare recipients (politicians, government workers) will always keep the racket going because it's the easy way. When it finally goes to crumbles they blame the productive and the problem continues. You have to love how voting to steal from others isn't greed but earning your own wealth is. That's a bunch of bs right there to begin with.

Nobody is saying people don't deserve what they *earn*. People don't deserve what they steal, be it at gunpoint or from government vote. Theft is theft.
Why don't rich people deserve what they earn? Why should they have it taken away?

When it comes to the rich...well some of them, they earn too much anyway i'm not trying to say they don't deserve it...well some don't. So you are just able to arbitrarily decide the amount of money someone has before they should just have it stolen away? Do you know how rich people become rich? By being productive. Now if they are in bed with the government (like .000001% of rich people) then they shouldn't have that. You have way more poor and middle class people stealing from others through government vote getting money they don't deserve, why should they be able to keep it? You don't like people having more and simply want to steal it by saying they "didn't earn it" but then saying a person who is poor deserves what they keep. It's theft. "A person is too productive" so let's steal it and give them incentives to be less productive and wonder why this country is broke. If they aren't producing things of value and creating jobs, how are the losers going to get their stolen money? There are people in the world far poorer than you. Should they be able to rob you at gun point? You're rich compared to them.

You mean the poor and middle class? Because they're far richer than people in Africa as well, so if you feel that way I'd be happy to see you and other middle class and working class people donate your money to Africa to even the odds. Seeing as people don't want to pay more for goods at the grocery store to help out fellow workers I doubt that will happen. Do you know how money works? It's not just some magical treasure chest that someone found. People in Africa are poor for reasons that have nothing to do with America. Namely big socialist governments.

People even say nonsense like "well my ancestors were slaves". Black people had black slave owners too, and many people in the past dealt with racism, like Asians for instance. Mississippi has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the nation and is dirt poor. I've grown up around this envious, lazy mentality. It's the reason black society is ruined and America with it.

If you could set a cap on profits for individuals, where exactly would you set it and could you walk me through the process of how that specific number was chosen? Thanks Ragnar

My guess on the income argument is "Anything up to the amount I make should be tax free, and anything more than that should go to the people." Exactly. The sad part is that people have no problem enslaving the productive at gunpoint. When you try to leave then they want to steal even more via an exit tax.
