Very interesting debate with a disillusioned communist.

Its interesting how people try to misrepresent Thomas Jefferson.
Another means of silently lessening the inequality of property is to exempt all from taxation below a certain point, and to tax the higher portions of property in geometrical progression as they rise.

Jefferson was definitely big on limited government and he eliminated direct taxes on the US citizens when he took office. He preferred things like a sales tax. People often skew things to support their views. Jefferson was more talking about the dangers of big government. Americans are supposed to be equal based on treatment of the law, it was never meant for everyone to have equal wealth since everyone doesn't take an equal approach to life. One shouldn't be penalized for success or rewarded for failure.
I don't want the government taxing people more rich or poor. The government has more than enough and should cut their absurd levels of spending. Even if they stole all of the wealth of everyone else it wouldn't solve our tremendous debt problem and that is definitely not what Jefferson was about.
"The simplest system of taxation yet adopted is that of levying on the land and the laborer. But it would be better to levy the same sums on the produce of that labor when collected in the barn of the farmer; because then if through the badness of the year he made little, he would pay little. It would be better yet to levy it only on the surplus of this produce above his own wants. It would be better, too, to levy it, not in his hands, but in those of the purchaser; because though the farmer would in fact pay it, as the purchaser must deduct it from the original price of his produce yet the farmer would not be sensible that he paid it... What a comfort to the farmer to be allowed to supply his own wants before he should be liable to pay anything, and then to pay only out of his surplus." --Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 1784. Papers 7:558
This guy doesn't understand that nothing happens in a vacuum. Whenever you pass laws or tax more it has an effect on people's behavior. That's what central planners don't realize.

Using Jefferson's quote as an example. The government makes money on each and every transaction the produce makes from the farmer all the way to reach the consumer. Yet Congress and the President can't seem to make ends meet. Its a shame TJ couldn't see what the US has become.

What I like about the sales tax system besides the fact that it's less evasive and completely constitutional is that it's easy and quick. You pay it, you keep your privacy, and the government doesn't get to dip their hands in your pocket and just start stealing. Not to mention you have a way to get around and minimize these taxes by staying away from higher taxed items. Also it keeps the government in check because they can't just tax like crazy to spend so much money. Not that it matters much now. They just print and inflate so we all pay no matter what and they get what they want by promising stuff they can't and shouldn't deliver.
