I don't really watch japanese anime or read manga that much these days. But, I do dig around whenever I feel like watching something. And, this series is pretty good. I prefer the manga, but you can discuss the anime if y'all want.

What draws you into it over something like DBZ?

It uses the generic Chi system that most of these types of shows use, but it formulates very intricate set of rules to how it works. So, the combat is very "smart". The characters are not too powerful either, it takes effort to develop your abilities and the system makes it so that anyone can win.
Also, the badguys aren't necessarily beaten at the end the story arc. Like in DBZ, rather they comeback and are still viable "pwer level" wise. It's more like YYH than DBZ anyway. But, even more unpredictable. It also has the 4 main character system YYH had.

That's what I liked about Yu Yu Hakusho and the original Dragon Ball, the characters were more unique and had to think a lot more, instead of just "whose power level is the largest". When they got to DBZ it was just power levels and explosions. This caters to the masses but it's more predictable and boring. Not to mention everyone comes back when they "die" if they're a hero.

Also, YYH knew how to play around with the formula more. After the Dark Tournament the fights for a while became more strategic and more about outsmarting your opponent. All the new villains were weaker than the main cast minus Sensui in his true personality. But, they were smarter or had more experience and gave the heroes problems. Hunter x Hunter is like Chapter black, but all the time.

I think most people like Dark Tournament and then Black, but Chapter Black was more cerebral to me, it's like the cast had to think a lot more. The last chapter tied everything together but characters were insanely powerful at that point. Nothing wrong with strong characters but I like the strategy. Hence why I like the original DB. Characters were unique and they had to be more creative to win, vs just out muscling everything.

Chapter Black is my favorite too. Most people liked Dark Tournament, but Chapter Black was amazing. I like how the author can switch between high octane traditional power up fights and Cerebral fights like in Chapter Black. It's why I think he's best at what he does.

Yea, DBZ style power up matches are what the masses want. That said they still had more thinking in them more than in DBZ. Chapter Black was the highlight for me. I like how well organized the villain was and I like how he ended up actually being strong and smart at the end with the sacred power. It was quite neat the similarities he had with Yusuke.

Very few series are like YYH and HXH. I remember someone complaining that Hunter X Hunter had too much talking and not enough fighting. Made me laugh.

Lots of explosions and big punches. They like power up style fights and not anything with any thinking. That's why DBZ is so popular. Granted it is entertaining in some ways, but it isn't cerebral.

I wouldn't mind that once in a while. But I think after a while it gets old. There's no switching up like in YYH does. It became too much of the samething after a while.
