I'm watching this and reading it simultaneously, and I was wondering what everyone else thought of it? Many people seem to love it or hate it, but I've given it a shot to see where it stands.
It has some good animation, some funny moments, and quite a bit of fanservice. There are some flaws with the reptition and the way the arcs play out. Not to mention the overused "power of friendship" that becomes somewhat irritating as the main character fights a villain that's supposedly really powerful and stronger than he, only to end up one shotting them. Not only that but the enemies become friends.
To me it seems like the most developed character is Erza (no pun intended). She has a good back story and is a good character, however she often ends up incapacitated to allow Natsu to clench the victory against the main enemy. Gray is cool too but he's often just there to fight a weak sidekick. Lucy is baasically fanservice.
What are your thoughts?

I'll have to update my feeling on the show.
The show has its good parts. Great quick humor. Funny and relateable characters and an interesting way they handle the magic system (which is very much like Ki or Chi in other shows). I like the setting and the way they handle the guild.
Some of the things I don't like. Waaaaaaaaaaayyyyy too much reliance on "nakama power" basically this is the "power of friendship". It was interesting early on but it allows the heroes to overcome matches they simply have no business winning, and with no good explanation. This is part of what makes Natsu and Erza fights too pitched compared to a lot of the other fights. Take Erza vs Azuma and Kyouka. In the former Azuma was powered up with the Tenrou tree, and completely outmatched Erza. She managed to just pull out a win by "believing in her friends". I know this is fiction but it gets ridiculous at times. It was almost a troll job when she beat Kyouka while she lost all of her senses but could feel pain on the inside.
No explanation other than "she's Erza".
Bad writing on that end.
Also Erza has become too much of a Mary Sue. Characters friend or foe alike comment on her strength, beauty, and power constantly and she has no real flaws and a "tragic backstory". She also never really loses. Would like to see more of Gray and Lucy get some time and less of Natsu and Erza.
Lucy seems to be stronger but still too silly. I'm glad she isn't overpowered by Erza, but she's too much of a joke at times.
That's just an update I wanted to post. I'll add more as I think of things. I have to get back on but I'm waiting for the new episodes. I read some of it, and I guess I can comment on that as I go along too.

It has good characters, but the story is lame.

It has good characters, but the story is lame. Do you find the story to be shallow or repetitive? I definitely think it can do more in that department. It always starts out with the "greatest and most powerful" evil force and then finishes with a bunch of fights where the enemy is strong and Natsu just uses nakama power to win. So yes. It definitely gets repetitive.

The last arc I read was the one where they went to that parrallel world. YEah, its repetitive tbh. Just not my thing.

I thought that was one of the better arcs where they at least tried to be somewhat original and creative. Not sure why they brought back the dead sister though.

With the exception of YYH and the authors other work: Hunter X Hunter. I've never been a fan of those long running series. Not anymore, but people in general tend to love them.

Is it because you feel that the quality diminishes over time?

Is it because you feel that the quality diminishes over time? That and authors eventually become formulaic. Togashi is just different, he takes breaks and works at his own pace. His story also plays around with convention really well.

His story also plays around with convention really well. His work is good as long as he's not forced to continue. "Three Kings Saga" in YYH had massive power creep and wasn't needed. Much like the Buu saga.

My problem wasn't the powerlevels, but the bad writing. The three Kings were the top of the echelon. So, I don't mind them being so strong. But, Senui power up was BS.

Well yea the three kings were strong. I was more talking bout character fodder like the dark tournament characters who returned like Rinku and Jin becoming so strong (mid S class). I liked it at Sensui because S class was mysterious and powerful and it was a one of a kind thing. Sensui was a fighting prodigy who mastered a really powerful art and it was extreme. We didn't know the extent of S class and he was extraordinarly strong... only for him to job like nothing and then become fodder level. He was almost dying at that point and I'm sure if he was in his prime health and constantly training he had unlimited potential, but such a shame to see that happen to a great character. Maybe Sensui should have just killed them and they could have had a dark ending for once, lol.
