Just wondering if anybody else has used digital art tablets and what they think of them.
I use the Bosto and I think it is excellent and WAY more reasonably priced than Paycom (Wacom).
Thoughts?

I've had the 14WA it was really great to work with especially if your a new artist trying to get your work digital The 14 inch is the perfect size as it's basically like paper. It has all of the functions plus express buttons. Does all the things the Wacom does while costing far less. Even the smaller Wacom devices are all over 1k, not to mention they try to patent devices to prevent innovation of other competitors. That way they charge an exorbitant price.

Yea they overheat and they're overpriced as well. They're not "bad" mind you, just too much price for what you get.

I currently use Bosto 22HD tablet, and this is my honest opinion about it, as well as comparison to wacom product.
22HD is a very good tablet for digital illustrators and artist, I just wish I waited few months for 22HDx. I don't know what the deference but there's gotta be something. I have cons and pros for this tablet and here it is. this is is a review for 22HD and not for 22HDx.
One major thing that bothers me about bosto, is the line precision, they are kind of wiggly to me. not sure for 22HDx, but definitely on 22HD and early releases. I use this Clip studio's special feature line stabilization to straighten my line and strokes. second, not really a major problem but here it is, the glass is just too far from the screen, you can see your pen hovering. third, the usb, it looks poorly made, set it up properly or your cursor will be jumpy.
Comparison:
Wacom Bamboo(medium)- I have great experience with wacom bamboo. I won one in an animation competition and my first tablet. This is basically a plain tablet, not a monitor graphic tablet. at first, I had trouble getting used to it, but after a week it feels more natural. I say, It is very precise. pressure is prefect, just like pen and paper. I bet intuos is better and I will definitely buy one if my tablet breaks down.
Wacom Cintiq 12wx- I worked at local animation studio and used it for 2 years. It's small but definitely one of the good tablets out there. It feels comfortable, strokes are smooth, pressure is okay, it's just too small and resolution is also not that great. I believe it's around 1024x768px, working space will be smaller if your program has no full-screen on canvas. It heats up after 5-8 hours of work, your hand will be sweaty so you gotta give it a little break, or just wear drawing gloves. But definitely one of the best tablet out there, I'd pay half price for it though.
Bosto 22HD- This is one big nice tablet. but as someone who used wacom before, this is a huge downscale to quality. Customer service is horrible too, I contacted them and they are trying so hard to make me believe that 22hd and 22hdx is completely the same, obviously that extra "x" is not just for nothing. I figured everything out, trouble shooting, installed new firmwares myself. But it's a really good alternative tablet if you can't afford wacom, I mean it 1/3 of the price, so this is definitely worth buying especially if you are starting to build your art skills. It's not so different from wacom.
I'm not gonna sugar-coat wacom or bosto, but if you have the money, go for overpriced wacom, you'll know where that extra money go. If you're picking your first tablet, go to bosto or other alternative brand. but must have good troubleshooting skills. If one day my bosto tablet breaks, I'll get wacom 13HD. If I don't have the fund, then I'll get Wacom intuos large, or bosto 14wa.
Overall, I am happy with bosto, but I'm still looking for improvement especially the line precision. the wiggles frustrates me more than anything.
Please tell me your opinion with your 22HDx.

These are the comparisons between the models at both sites, so it shows you the differences in the models: bosto-tablet.com/models/comparison/www.bosto.co/home/specificationsThe 22 HD+ and HDx are identical except that the Hdx has express buttons and the wheels that you can assign functions to- making it faster. These are upgraded from the original 22HD with a better digitizer and you can use a battery free pen (Wacom had a patent that prevented others from using those pens which killed competition (part of why I like free competition). They also have newer drivers on the hdx and hd+ should be more up to date as well. Now for support, smaller companies tend to have more user based support that people use by reading and interacting, this is beneficial as you learn neat things and get solutions to problems in different ways since someone has pretty much always had your problem. Feel free to ask them or even me and I'll be glad to help. forum.bosto.co/index.phpgroups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bosto-user-group/categories For software, each tablet has software that works best with it. Here are the places to look at that: docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmJoqYHuLE3xdG1lblVlWjFCTk0wOGc3UU1JSE5uVEE#gid=0I use Manga Studio 5 ex. I strongly recommend it as I find it the best for line work (clip studio is very close too). I use photoshop for editing though, but it's not for drawing. I've had no problems out of it. To fix jitter make sure you're using post correction in CONJUNCTION with stabilization. A lot of stabilization will slow you down though, but I find post correction fixes the jitter. Makes life so much better. I don't even really need a ruler with it if I adjust it for super straight lines. Too much post correction will affect your curves. Make sure you file->preferences->tablet and choose wintab. I have no complaints from my units. Once I set it up and made sure my computer was on high performance it went well. Everything works smooth and fine and the express keys are great while costing 1/3-1/4 what Wacom does. Wacom gets by on the name and the fact that they have patents that prevent competition in many aspects like no battery pens. They've had their share of issues like any unit (esp overheating) and they definitely have a strong community much like Apple. They're not bad by any means just not worth the high price. Here's a comprehensive interview of the HDx from someone who used both professionally. Hope that helps bro.

yeah, I know right, the express buttons. I just felt cheated after being polite and cooperative and all. I'm not asking for free upgrade, I mean I'll even pay for shipping. They don't want it because I have the first batch tablet which is more like a trial product. It came horrible when I first got it, it's almost unusable they have me install firmware(not driver, it's a separate installation with very complex steps, I'm not exaggerating, I spend 2 whole weeks for it, yes and aroung 6 hours a day for 2 weeks) I almost gave up, but they are so happy I figured out some of the problem, it's like being a beta tester, it made me happy, until good new ones came out. but well anyway, I got it working good after all the efforts. though I don't see any improvement in their driver updates.
From using Photoshop, I switched to Manga studio 5 EX because I can no longer use my stable hands so I have to rely on stabilization program, yes manga studio, same as you use. but I found out that Clip studio has better 3d features and extra tools, oh no, I don't want to pay for it again, so I joined their little competition and luckily came in forth so I got a free copy of it. to be honest, I'm just a little sad I can't see my real strokes on Photoshop unless I use other tablet.
I prefer not to ask them anymore, because just get the same answer over and over again, but perhaps you can help me. open Photoshop(no stabilizer), create new document just enough to occupy the whole active screen area, select brush tool. draw several lines across the screen. make slow strokes as well. does it still wiggle badly? Can you show me the export image? I wanna see the comparison between the old ones and new ones, see if it improves.
I saw the video and it looks totally different from the first batch. I think I like it.

I think I like it. It's a shame you had a bad experience with your starting product but I guess every product has their lemon or a person with a bad experience. I do know that Photoshop and some programs tend to be integrated with Wacom as they're more common but I never had any problems with it. I know you can take a product back early on, and some people are able to get exceptions from the support group. If you had it a long time it would be unlikely. When did you get it? Also the first version of a product tends to have more issues that get ironed out over time. I hadn't heard too many issues with the 22, but I know the HDX is better and more improved. I don't like Photoshop for line work at all, it just doesn't run as well. I heard clip studio was really good like manga studio (and they're both similar). I get results out of both. Are you using post correction like I mentioned to get better line quality?? If you use Post Correction in manga studio (I'm guessing it's in clip studio as well) then you won't have line problems. Then you can use photoshop to edit your images. More on post correction: www.clip-studio.com/site/gd_en/csp/toolguide/csp_toolguide_en/100_reference/100_reference_hosei.htmmancer.com/2011/06/09/draw-straight-line-without-ruler/As for the line test. This guy is using a 22HD and it works well for him: You could try selling it and buying the 22hdx perhaps, you might find one on sale or a great on on ebay for cheap.

[/quote] That's exactly it, I should have 3 months to return it. we'll I don't want to return it, I want to upgrade it and pay the extra expenses, but they didn't agree. left all my questions unanswered. they're like telling me that "It's useless to upgrade because they're identical product, just keep it" something like that. I like photoshop because it is widely used and I spent 7 years trying to master every bit of it and I hate to see it being useless because of tablet. not useless but I will never be able to use it for line art. Post correction, yes. Actually, Manga studio and Clip studio is the same. Clip studio is made by celcys, it's a japanese company. Manga studio is made by smithmicro, it's another company(their partner), they translated the clip studio to English. But years after, I don't know exactly what happened between two, but celsys made their own multilingual version of clip studio. yes, that's how I do it, I use both photoshop and clips studio. it's just some of their individual fuction cannot be converted to the other, like Add blend mode in clip/manga studio. in photoshop it converts as colordodge which is less bright. and photoshop has a lot of lighting effects, color correction and photo filters that cannot be shown correctly in clip/manga studio. but other than that, I love both products. except photoshop is releasing new version without any notable feature.

Just return it, then take the money and get something else. Not sure why you can't. Unless they just repair it at this point which is likely why they won't. It sucks that you got that one right before the better ones came out, but it's still a solid unit.
Photoshop just isn't as good for line work, manga studio just feels and runs a lot better. Now for editing images (like I do on my site), photoshop is unparalleled. It's wonderful for that, but for illustration manga or clip sutdio.
Photoshop is just as much as a cost sink as wacom lol. Apple too for that matter.

They have me wait several months because they said they are working on a new driver and it won't make any difference from new batch of tablets when it comes to performance. until my 3 month return warranty is over, I didn't argue and instantly gave up. we'll it's usable, so why not just take it. it's not so bad. another reason is, I have huge project coming that time, it took them a month to ship my tablet(poor other people who waited 1.5 month), I am not waiting another month. I agree with you, it's just I find photoshop getting along with me well. I can draw straight lines just fine without stabilizer. I trained 2 year for my lines, traditional style, oh well, forget it. Yes, That's one good point. Photoshop is just too expensive. I got cs3 free on wacom tablet but other than that, it is not affordable to upgrade or buy. good guy celsys/smitchmicro, thanks for bringing us manga/clip studio. it's also 75% off several months ago.

Yea, when did you buy the item? You should have definitely gone through the support community, they work with people a lot. I find they have more pull with certain people there than talking to people who are in China or whatever, just a different way of handling things over there. You still have a fine piece of machinery and you don't like that one just sell and buy a used one if the return approach doesn't work. I was confused as I thought you had line jitter? You could just use a slight stabilization/correction, that way you don't lose the speed. I like photoshop for editing like I said before. Most people just download photoshop through torrents, since they are so overpriced.

If you are talking about Jeff of bosto, yes I know him. But they are just reseller. If I want to get my tablet replaced, I'll have to contact main bosto where I bought it. I gotta deal with Chineseman. it was too long to tell the story, but I get them. they don't my tablet back. Sell and Buy is a good idea, unfortunately, not in my country. people here wants a used item with the price of almost free. if I sell it overseas, tax and shipping will definitely cost me a lot just like how it came. in my country that is. Yes, it's almost time I tell you what I really mean. Even though I stopped making money with animation, I still practice it because it nice to have and Some of my clients now especially Japanese and western requires tiny bit of animation per project. Thing is, program for animation is not clip studio. I use adobe flash, or toonboom. jitters from bosto and stabilization will not help you(they don't have stabilization like manga studio). One major thing I want to say all this time, Animation is similar to illustration, it's just you have to draw what you hand intends to. because you gotta draw that line over and over again for some part. Kinda hard to explain, we call them easing. some part stays the same some part moves somewhere but some part should slightly move to smoothen the motion. I know what they think, copy paste, but no, unfortunately it's not easy. I gotta admit I have few programs from TOR. but not my primary tools.

Your options are limited then. You could sell it and add the shipping costs to the cost of the item, that's what some people do. That way you could sell it and buy another. You would also have to look at downtime like you said. Jitter stuff tends to vary on the item and the program. Wacom has jitter on other apps as well, I just try to do certain things with certain applications for efficiency. Did you try that chart out to see what programs might work best? I remember when I first heard about how expensive photoshop was when I was in college back in 05. Some lady said she got photoshop on a huge discount. I asked her what it cost and she said $200. I was like "what!" for a piece of software. My god when I saw the normal price. Who pays that? Schools don't and students don't. Everyone else steals it, lol.

Imagine the active area is bunch of grid, if that grid is not refine enough, obvious snap is most likely to happen. My brother who studied Computer engineering came to the same conclusion. but that's just our theory, no proof. Yep, I did the same thing in college. I'm broke and my mother gives me barely enough allowance. you are basically just paying for its name. But I'm surprised, schools too?

Either way you produce good art with it so there's that. I was still shocked when I heard how much photoshop costs. They could make the price reasonable and sell to more people since it's all digital anyways.

Some update on the jitter stuff you were talking about earlier. I actually didn't have any with the pen, but my eraser felt wobbly.
This is what I did:
Changed my screen to 50 hertz (adjusted refresh rate). This helped a lot. I also had a setting Vector Eraser which I turned off. If you want you can adjust stabilization and post correction here too to have straighter eraser lines, but you don't need it.
Also if those don't work try: Changing your usb hub ( or using a powered one if that doesn't work), updating your drivers, or perhaps even using older ones.
I have none anymore and I only had a little mid screen. Jitter is just a nuisance with digitizers on these tablets but they can be minimized and eliminated. See if changing your refresh rate helps if you haven't done that.
Go to control panel-> display (click on your tablet monitor)-> advanced settings-> monitor. Adjust your refresh rate here.
Hope that helps.

Some update on the jitter stuff you were talking about earlier. I actually didn't have any with the pen, but my eraser felt wobbly. Hope that helps. I don't see how the going down to 50hertz would improve it but I tried it anyway, and I don't see any difference. the usb hub, I dumped its cable when it first came, I think its cable is poorly made and causes more elector-magnetic conflicts. I bought new one, and shorter with double-beaded on its end. compare to the old cable it's better. as I said, I almost tried everything, more than I'd like to admit. I think replacing the tablet itself to their newest ones will solve it. see their new tablet 22u? they are the old tables, they just reused the parts from the old tablets so it's not going to waste. I appreciate all the help, I moved on anyway so it's no longer a big deal to me. I'll probably just do as you suggest. sell and buy.

If you're having jitter problems the refresh rate could be an issue. What parts of the screen are you having it on? I would like to see a video, but you said you're not going to bother. So you're looking for the mini or did you want the HDX?

So you're looking for the mini or did you want the HDX? Probably, but too bad it didn't work for me. I'm having jitters for parts of the screen, but I like to use the left side because I'd say it has less jitter spots. I think 14wa is good for me, I don't think I would need 22 inches of space anyway, but still nice to have. depends, maybe I'll just go for intuos 4 or 5 since many said that it has the most sensitive and comfortable.

Yea I have both and I think if you have the money the hdx isn't that much more expensive but it's bulky. The 14wa does just wonderful and it is more portable. Like a piece of paper (and what I was originally getting). The HDX was such a good deal that I got it first though. The only other thing I can think of is maybe changing drivers. Also do you get jitters for the pen or the eraser, or both?

I have jitter for pen and eraser but I think eraser is twice as bad, I'm not really bothered of its eraser since I work with my right hand on the pen and tablet and left one for keyboard. pressing E is more convenient for me than flipping the pen around. and I don't think it could erase well with the slant design. Yeah I know, right. the drivers are not so good. I've installed their recent driver this feb and I hate it. I switched back to old driver after trying it for few mins. or maybe not for 22HD, just for 22hdX.

The 14wa didn't seem to jitter outside of the corners (the cursor jittered but there was no jitter when I drew on it if that makes sense) and the 22 hdx gave me no problems with jitter after I made the adjustments. I had a little bit in the middle of the screen, but that's it. The 22HDX looks better as it has an IPS screen so it looks great in multiple angles. I've been trouble shooting my 14wa though because of an intermittent connection. I had issues with the eraser and not with the pen on the 22hdx (when I had it), once I changed it to 50Hz it went away. I draw with both hands so I like balance. Are you posting as Avalonx?

So 22HDX sounds great, I gotta reconsider it. how long you waited after they ship your tablet? It took mine a month + 7 day for shipping so I wish they ship faster now. isn't 50Hz affecting the color slightly? when I changed mine, screen looked lighter. Pardon me, I don't know what is Avalonx. what is it?

Pardon me, I don't know what is Avalonx. what is it? I ordered mine from the factory and it took like 3 days! It was super fast. Faster than my normal mail. I must say I have *0* complaints about it. A+. For the price difference of $529 and $900 (I paid 800 myself), I'd go for the 22hdx every time. The smaller ones can be taken around but they do take wires and such. Nah it shouldn't, thought it might refresh slower.
