With the show set to move to a new network, fans can likely expect to see some changes to the DC Comics show when it returns. But audiences don’t have to wait until the premiere to find out what to expect. New details about the show’s upcoming episodes have already started to surface. Here’s everything we know about Supergirl Season 2 so far.
1. It’ll be on a new network
By now, most have probably heard that Supergirl will moving from CBS to The CW for its sophomore season. The move comes after reports that CBS and Warner Bros. had reached a stalemate in negotiations over the show’s $3 million per-episode price tag. The former apparently felt that the hefty costs weren’t justified by Season 1’s ratings (which lost around half of its initial 13 million viewers over the season).
As negotiations dragged on, there was talk that CBS head Les Moonves could move Supergirl to its network branch The CW, which already has an established lineup of DC Comic series, including Arrow and The Flash. The move was finally confirmed in mid-May, with CBS calling it a “win-win” for everyone. In accordance with the switch, Supergirl will also be moving production to Vancouver, which is where the other Greg Berlanti-produced DC shows are filmed and which will likely help decrease some of the show’s costly budget.
2. We may see less of Cat Grant
The show’s transition to The CW won’t cause much of a shakeup among the core cast — with one notable exception. Most of the core cast members — including Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan — are expected to reprise their roles (as Kara Danvers aka Supergirl, James Olsen, Alex Danvers, and Winn Schott Jr, respectively) in Season 2.
But there is one co-star who we may see less of this time around: Calista Flockhart, who plays Kara’s boss and the head of media empire, Cat Grant. With the actress reportedly unwilling to move from Los Angeles to Vancouver full-time for filming, rumors have been swirling that her role will be reduced in the show’s sophomore season. But fans shouldn’t panic yet. In May, CW boss Mark Pedowitz addressed the speculation, saying that Flockhart “wants to continue with the show” and the network is currently in “ongoing discussions” with the actress in order to figure out the best scheduling for all parties.
Update 7/14/16: Adding to speculation that Flockhart’s Cat may be around less next season? Entertainment Weekly has just revealed that the series has cast a new boss for Kara. Cougar Town star Ian Gomez has joined the show to play Lucas “Snapper” Carr, the new editor-in-chief of CatCo Magazine. Per EW, “Snapper’s commitment to hard-hitting journalism pushes CatCo reporters to dig deeper in the pursuit of excellence. He’s a man who tells people what he thinks of them, and his no-holds barred approach pushes Kara in unexpected ways.”
As fans will remember, Kara got promoted at the company at the end of the last season and the new gig certainly leaves the potential for audiences to meet new characters in the workplace. But the introduction of a new boss also seems likely to serve the purpose of filling in any absences left by Flockhart, who probably won’t be on the show full-time next season.
Update 8/2/16: Flockhart is set to continue — albeit in a reduced capacity — on Supergirl, even as the show changes networks in Season 2. According to Deadline, an agreement has been reached between the actress and producer Warner Bros TV and Flockhart is now set to be a recurring guest star next season.
3. It will introduce some major new characters
National City is about to see an influx of new faces. According to TVLine, Supergirl Season 2 will introduce at least five new characters in its sophomore season — including Lex Luthor’s sister, Lena. Casting is still undergoing, but the report says that Lena will be in the 25-35 year old range and is described as “sexy and smart and determined to get what she wants.” She arrives in town to get out from under the shadow of her infamous brother, although her exact plans are unclear. Update 8/5/16: According to TVLine, Katie McGrath has nabbed the part of Lena Luthor.
Another character that’s about to become a series regular is Nick Farrow. Per TVLine, Nick is a “brash leading man” who butts heads with Kara at CatCo. The son of a famous reporter, Nick is “looking to make a name for himself in the news world” but has trouble leaving behind his former selfish and hedonistic ways. He will start to embrace his inner hero after hanging out with Kara.
The other three new characters are recurring roles and include: The Doctor, the diabolical female leader of Project Cadmus who surgically implants prisoners with alien technology; Snapper Carr, a veteran journalist appointed by Cat to remake the news division and Maggie, an out and proud detective for the newly formed Science Police, which deals specifically with metahuman and alien threats. Casting is currently underway for all those roles as well.
Update 7/14/16: Floriana Lima (The Family) has joined the cast in the series regular role of Maggie, described above.
Update 8/14/16: Sharon Leal will play the role of Miss Martian on Supergirl this season and it’s also been confirmed that Chris Wood’s pod character is indeed that of Mon-E.
4. We’ll learn a lot more about Project Cadmus
The freshman season finale teased Project Cadmus, the mysterious organization that’s apparently been holding Jeremiah Danvers hostage this whole time. The organization will prove to be a major foe for Kara and co this season, as EP Andrew Kreisberg recently told Entertainment Weekly. “[Project Cadmus is] dedicated to eradicating alien life on Earth,” he said. “They’re fanatics. They’re true believers. It’s a collection of scientists, of very bright, patriotic people who truly believe what they’re saying. That makes them even more dangerous.”
5. Superman will make an appearance
Though Kara made several references to her famous cousin in the show’s freshman season, the latter never actually physically appeared on the series, as producers didn’t want to tear focus away from Supergirl herself. But that’s all set to change, now that Kara has established herself as a hero.
According to Deadline, the Man of Steel will be appearing on Supergirl in the flesh in the early episodes of the series’s upcoming second season. The publication reports that the hero will visit his cousin in National City in the premiere episode of Season 2 and will also appear in the second episode, with potential to return in other installments down the line. The role of the iconic DC Comics character has not been yet filled, but casting for the part is currently underway.
Update 6/16/16: Per THR, the CW series has cast Teen Wolf grad Tyler Hoechlin as its version of Superman/Clark Kent.”Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said of the casting news. “We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

Update 7/5/16: Series star David Harewood shared the official premiere title over on Instagram (seen above), The Adventures of Supergirl. Though it may not sound like much, comic books fans may recognize that title is a tie-in to The Adventures of Superman, the name of the original ‘40s radio show and the George Reeves TV series.

Update 8/5/16: A new video from the Vancouver set has leaked online, capturing Hoechlin’s Superman battling against the villain. Though it’s a little hard to tell, some have suggested that this foe is none other than classic villain, Metallo. That has yet to be confirmed, but you can decide for yourself after checking out the video, below:

6. It will feature a cameo from a former DC star
As previously rumored, Lynda Carter, who played the original Wonder Woman, will guest star on Supergirl Season 2. The actress will reportedly play the role of the President of the US next season. As EPs Kreisberg and Berlanti first teased back in April, the two had initially wanted Carter to cameo in the show’s freshman season, but couldn’t work out scheduling conflicts. Her appearance has since been confirmed for Season 2.

7. Expect more DC Comic crossovers
Now that Supergirl is on The CW, it’ll be that much easier for the show to facilitate more crossovers with the network’s Arrowverse (including Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow). The show’s freshman season featured Kara meeting Barry Allen’s The Flash (Grant Gustin). With both titles now on the same network, viewers can likely expect to see see the two cross paths again — and this time, characters from the other DC Comic shows may also join them.
In fact, Pedowitz began teasing the potential for a four-way crossover event back in May. “Just imagine what our superhero crossover episode is going to look like come December!” he said, after news of Supergirl‘s move to The CW was confirmed.
Update 8/8/16: Arrow‘s Stephen Amell has teased an upcoming crossover between the four shoes, with the follow photo showing the uniform-clad feet of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and The White Canary, respectively:

Update 8/15/16: In addition to a four-way crossover, it’s been confirmed that Supergirl will also air a two-episode musical crossover with The Flash. The event would reportedly feature mostly existing songs, with the potential for some original. The two episodes will take place in the back half of the season, and potentially use a character’s mind as a reason for all the singing.
8. It will keep its original timeslot
Fans won’t have to worry about altering their TV schedules or reprogramming their DVRs for Supergirl Season 2. Despite moving to a different network, the show is expected to maintain its original time slot of Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET. That will have the series paired with Jane the Virgin, which airs in the following hour. Meanwhile, The CW’s other DC Comic series will remain in their current Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday timeslots.
Supergirl Season 2 will return to the small screen on October 10 on The CW. In the weeks leading up to the premiere, the network will also re-air Supergirl’s freshman season.
