I see a few refurbished i7 laptops with decent low end grafx cards on eBay. A few generations old, only 4gb ram and 500gb hard drive. But c says you can do better new, so I will be interested to see the item. No you'll definitely do better refurbished or on clearance than brand new at $300 (or period). In fact I put a few items up. I was saying that at a super low end machine that laptops are cheap since they're integrated.

So how was I wrong when I posted that she would have to go used to get what she wants in terms of CPU power, portability and be under her price cap? As well as looking on ebay for said item?
Because it looks like you posted exactly what I described.

Generally a desktop provides a better bang for the buck vs a laptop. Especially if you build it yourself. I was disagreeing with that part, I didn't say you were wrong about buying used or anything of that matter. I didn't even say the word wrong if I recall. I said: If you're buying something really cheap and low end then laptops tend to edge out terms of costs since everything comes together and the most pricey part is the screen. For a desktop you end up having several parts and it costs more at the super low end, plus you can't move and I imagine since she's a student she wants to get around and not be stuck around her house. For very casual users I'd go laptop hands down. Unless she's enthusiast gamer who wants to game on a desktop and wants to save a few bucks I'd say no to a desktop in this situation. Even then she'd have to get a tablet or mobile device to make up for the lack of portability and if she's only spending $300 she'd be shelling out twice IMO. If Kitsune trusts used she could try that avenue. Also some stores have clearance prices on new laptops that are going out of date. My mom bought an Asus with an i7, touch screen, 8 gb ram, and a gtx 740 m for around $500 from Sams. It was on clearance since they were restocking with new stuff, sometimes you can find refurbished cheap as well. I meant to mention that earlier but it slipped my mind. You're making me paranoid lol. I just didn't think she'd want a desktop and for $300 you tend to pay a bit more on that end since the parts are separate vs just one machine with everything slapped together (cheaply mind you).

I have 3 desktop builds in mind that would fit under the cap. 1 Intel and 2 amd.
The problem is if she would even be willing to build a PC from scratch. Then are rebates included in the 300? Finally is upgrading later on a possibility?
If portability is a must than a used laptop is the best bet.

Also people like us tend to have parts lying around so you just have to scrimmage for a few things if you need them. If you were getting a new monitor, keyboard, mouse, tower, speakers, graphics card, processor, etc. It'd be hard to do that with $300 unless you found some crazy good deals on different parts on craigslist or something. You also have to be willing to do it. Overall I think we mostly agree though.

I think ima just do what mualen says and upgrade the RAM and hard drive of my laptop That could be possible depending on the type of laptop and how upgradeable it is. Many laptops at that level simply cannot, so be sure before you do it.

Yea, if your processor and everything else is good that might not be too bad. Was it simply the hard drive and ram that were lacking Kitsune?

Yeah. I have helped him a couple of times before. He already does the service portion.
Now he wants to sell parts reconditioned machines. Basically expand. So he needs someone with experience, willing to work and money to invest.
I don't mind working with him because I don't have to worry about him not carrying his fair share.

At least you have a good partner. Nothing worse than having a bad partnership. I hate being the one who does everything because what's the point? I might as well do it for myself and keep all of the pay.

Family is the worst on that front from my experience, which is why I don't bother with them at all. Business is business.
