www.eventhubs.com/news/2015/feb/13/depth-marvel-dead-eventhubs-investigates-and-speaks-pro-players-finally-answer-question-pt1-filipino-champ/“Marvel is dead!” You can't go to a tournament stream chat without seeing someone make the claim. Even beyond that, stories of desolate brackets from weekly tournaments get repeated in comments and on Reddit. Furthermore, with Capcom not capable of selling new copies of titles featuring Marvel characters, the situation looks even more bleak. Everything on the internet seems to be pointing towards the conclusion that the most recognized versus series in fighting games has finally met its maker, but is that really the case?
I've decided to talk to some of the highest level players in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and check the facts to find out for myself. Hopefully, the answers I received will shed some light on the future of the series.
Our first answer comes from Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez. Though he needs little introduction, the former Evolution champion has remained consistently one of the world's best in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Last year, he made number 3 in EventHubs's Top 30 UmvC3 players of 2014.
Check out our interview with him below and my thoughts concerning it. Ryan “Tryken” Tullis: Is there still meta in the game to be explored and discovered in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3?
Filipino Champ: I think in UMVC3 we basically know what is tournament viable. Just good or plain out just for fun teams. I enjoy playing Marvel a lot. I feel the game is less match up heavy and less random at the HIGHEST level and very random at mid [to] low level.
Ryan “Tryken” Tullis: Does the competition in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 continue to rise or is it stagnating?
Filipino Champ: Yes, the competition is getting tougher. I think it will be hard to rate who is in the UMvC3 top 20 now. It's always nice to see players improve and start kicking ass like Cosmos, Randomfiend, Prodigy, Toomuchdamage, and Somebrownkid.
Ryan “Tryken” Tullis: Do you think Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will have the staying power as some of its predecessors and other Capcom classics such as Capcom vs SNK 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, etc.?
Filipino Champ: [To be honest], UMVC3 will be at Evolution and major tournaments for at least 3-4 years. I really can't see UMVC3 not making it to the tournaments' "Top 8 main games." Every year, EVO has a Marvel game. Sure, the game is not getting bigger, but I don't think it can completely die like the other games (i.e. Injustice, anime games).
It looks like Filipino Champ appeals to tradition and Marvel vs Capcom 3’s pedigree to justify it sticking around at Evolution for a long time. It might not be too bad of an idea, either. Since the very first Evolution in 2002 (the first time it went by that name, anyway), Marvel vs Capcom has remained one of the major attractions. Marvel vs Capcom 2 alone lasted 9 years until it was finally replaced by its own sequel in 2011. While FChamp doesn’t see the scene for it growing (another likely prediction), the idea of Marvel vs Capcom no longer showing up on the main stage goes against what has remained true for more than a decade.
Do you agree with Filipino Champ’s life expectancy for Marvel? Let us know in the comments below.

Capcom should have worked out a better contract with Marvel. They can't even make new copies of the game and there are no arcade cabs. Stupid.

I think DBZ and some anime fanboys are the worst if we don't confine ourselves to just gaming.

You just can't have a large place without morons. The smart people are too jaded. Like I said, everything is discussing religion. Even if it isn't. It's all just personal preference and bias from the start. We'll see how long you last this time.

Better to do that for sure. But playing shitty games is just as bad, lol. Also you can always invite other smart/cool people even if you disagree with them. That's what I want because it can lead to better discussion.

Ill keep marvel alive myself.... I believe marvel will stick around until the next vs game comes out. I could probably deal with a capcom vs disney game lol love the game for capcom characters mainly anyways. I wonder if they ever thought about making an all resident evil fighting game cause I would for sure play that for the rest of my life!! I hate to admit it but I'm kinda a capcom fanboy They forced me to buy like 3 terrible resident evil games in the past 2-3 years and I'm still gonna buy the terrible resident evil game that comes out this month... at least Claire and Barry are back!! What they really need to do to fix my problems with them completely is: 1. Release Resident Evil Zero on ps3/ps4 since it was only on gamecube and wii. I'm sure that will make a ton of money if they do it as well as the hd re-release of re1. 2. Fix their relationship with snk for cvs3. 3. Classic Dante please. I didn't hate the reboot but you can't just change him like that!?!?! 4. Finish making the game before you sell it.... now that sounds like common sense but apparently dlc is the future. 5. Stop making me buy shity resident evil games by putting characters I like in it!! I haven't played a resident evil I didn't like as a GAME only hated them for technically not being a resident evil game :/

Capcom vs Disney eh? Goofy vs Akuma could actually have some appeal. What about Kingdom Hearts with Ryu?
Now, where do you think Resident Evil jumped off the cliff? Most people say 4 was the last great one, or maybe 5.
1. Would releasing on the PS3 be good if that console is going out? That said the PS4 is looking shitty so I guess it wouldn't hurt. I'd want everything on the PC as well. 2. Would LOVE a CvS3, but I am worried that Capcom would ruin it with their modern design. Maybe a CvS2 with online play for console/PC? 3. How did you like the reboot in terms of gameplay? 4. Yep. People have to stand their ground and stop buying garbage. 5. That's Crapcom for you. Anyways, what do you hate about modern RE games? Specifically?

Specifically? I loved re4 but its not really resident evil. I know that kinda doesn't make sense but its like they decided to become a Hollywood action game. I'd say in the main series (no spin offs) code veronica was the last great classic Resident Evil game before 4 came out and after Revelations was a breath of fresh air for actual resident evil fans. They have released almost all main series games on pc I believe except for zero and code veronica. Seems like they finally figured out pc is the way to go. I'm not much of a gamer anymore only play fighters and classics but I'm happy to know pc is moving up so I can finally ignore buying a new console every time a game I wanna play comes out. If your talking devil may cry reboot then gameplay is great! Its not even that I hate the new Dante its that I hate not having the old Dante. Modern RE games aren't bad like I said before. Let me put it this way resident evil is pretty much a survival horror puzzle game. Now lets fast forward to 4-5-6...they became first person shooters. ammo drops and cinematic movie gameplay!! It would be very similar to call of duty becoming a 3rd person war puzzle game!!

I thought that was generally considered the best before they became more like an action game. We are talking about the same game right? It might be overrated some though. Thank goodness more of these games are on PC (though you still had emulators if all else failed). So it's for nostalgia then? I guess they were making him more "edgy" to appeal to younger audiences or new gamers. I see what you mean now. I just hadn't heard 4 referred to as that much, but I know people loved the classic games. Particularly 2 and 3.

Yeah I know for sure we're talking about the same game lol you probably never heard anything bad about re4... I'm not gonna call re4 overrated. It was for sure a masterpiece!! It just lost the resident evil feel. If you haven't played one you should for sure buy the hd remake (of the remake lmao capcom) of the first game on steam. I think its only 20 bucks?? Its a very weird genre but If you play the first resident evil then try 4 you'll feel the difference immediately. Hell just watch gameplay if you don't wanna play it. Great story but its getting worse

The puzzles weren't hard at all either. Most of them were find objects and insert here nothing hard to figure out. Another great reason to play re was finding the case files to learn more about the timeline. 4 seemed to lack those files to learning more about past events. I personally preferred the fixed camera. It was also a pretty linear game :/ you never didn't know where or what you had to do to progress further. Its just not a resident evil game lol thats all I can say!! I will say this though the best thing about resident evil 4 would have to be beating it and unlocking "Separate Ways" Ada is probably one of the most badass mysterious character in gaming

So people are calling it more of a horror action game than survival style. It doesn't seem to be as far off as 5 or 6. I can see what you mean though.

Even Justin Wong is tired of X factor madness. www.eventhubs.com/news/2015/feb/26/depth-justin-wong-and-numbers-marvel-dead-find-out-final-installment-eventhubss-three-part-series/Is Marvel dead? Well, that depends on who you ask. We've already spoken with former Evolution champion Filipino Champ and MMG|ApologyMan—another top MvC3 player—to get some different perspectives on the hot issue.
However, I wanted to dig a bit deeper. That means talking to a tournament organizer to grab the unbiased numbers to get a different perspective to compare.
Even then, a tournament organizer is one interesting perspective, but what if I could bring in someone that has been at the top of the series for years? What if I could ask the greatest player in Marvel's long legacy?
EG|Justin Wong needs very little introduction in the world of Marvel vs. Capcom, but just in case you wanted any justification for his being on top, then consider that Wong has been the Evolution champion for a Marvel vs. Capcom title no less than 7 times.
Will Wong hammer the final nail into Marvel's coffin, or will he tear the casket open and to reveal a joystick and a TV ready to go?
Read below to join me for the final part of EventHubs's investigation. Ryan “Tryken” Tullis: Is there still meta in the game to be explored and discovered in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3?
EG|Justin Wong: I think there is so much meta left in the game. I do believe that the top tiers are established, but it just comes down to experimental duos and seeing more of underrated characters/assist. For example: More Shuma assists are being used. [I'm] still surprised more people aren't using Viewtiful Joe, MODOK, or seeing more Firebrands as well.
Ryan “Tryken” Tullis: Does the competition in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 continue to rise or is it stagnating?
EG|Justin Wong: I think the competition is rising, but the numbers are stagnating. I am pretty sure people are tired of the X-factor 3 madness which is one of the reasons why people rage so hard on this game.
Ryan “Tryken” Tullis: Do you think Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will have the same staying power as its predecessors and other Capcom classics such as Capcom vs. SNK 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, etc.?
EG|Justin Wong: I do believe so. I can't see Marvel ever disappearing from the tournament circuit just because it still brings in hype at the highest level, and Marvel always has the coolest comebacks ever!!!!!
Ryan “Tryken” Tullis: Finally, do you believe Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is "dead"? Feel free to discuss any reasons why or why not that you didn't already include in previous answers.
EG|Justin Wong: I do not think its dead. People always like [to follow the] trend [and say], "This game is dead." But in the end, it's always going to be super fun to watch, and when it comes down to it, people will ask, "WHEN'S MARVEL?"
Wow. Wong's opinion was strongly in favor of Marvel's continued success. If anyone has seen the series from the top, it's Wong. According to him, though, the numbers are stagnating. Are they?
I wanted to compare his perception with a tournament organizer, so I contacted CEO|Alex Jebailey for his thoughts. Jebailey, of course, runs Community Effort Orlando, one of the largest and most stacked fighting game tournaments in the world.
I asked him if he had seen any decline in Marvel entrance over the past few years. He replied, “Nope. Been consistent numbers every year, around the 230-256 player mark.” In regards to stream numbers, he noted, “Stream numbers for CEO go up every year.” That must mean Marvel included.
Finally, I asked him if he wanted to chime in on Marvel heading into the grave. Jebailey simply answered, “Not much to say [other than that], besides Smash and Street Fighter, it's had the biggest turnout at CEO every year for 5 years now.” That's half a decade of Marvel holding a top spot at CEO. It certainly doesn't show a downward trajectory.
And it's not only CEO that sees large numbers of people excited to watch some Marvel. EVO 2014's Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 grand finals were the most watched over any other games' at 149,470 viewers. By comparison, Ultra Street Fighter 4's finals sat in third at 130,396. Even when considering that Marvel's time slot was much more poised for prime time viewership than USF4's, it's still strong evidence of a thriving series.
As for my own thoughts after all of these interviews, I don't think Marvel will ever completely die. Like Justin Wong said, people will always ask, “Where's Marvel?”
But it isn't all roses. Despite Marvel vs. Capcom 3's stream numbers and continued success, it's a game that's reached terminal status in updates, digital sales, and new prints. Capcom probably isn't seeing a lot of money generated by the series anymore. If they want another versus title, they'll most likely have to turn to their own intellectual properties or another company to team up with. They'll expect the new versus fighter to be the premier one at tournaments. If that day comes, I expect Marvel to still exist at events, but with it settling into a more niche and historical form akin to Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom vs. SNK 2, etc.
The question remains, though, if Capcom will make a new crossover series in the next few years. This is speculation, but with Street Fighter 5 as the company's major focus, I doubt we'll see anything from them to rival Marvel vs. Capcom's claim as the most played versus attraction in the foreseeable future. Until they create something similar and new, Marvel has the legacy, the fan base, and enough interest to keep it on top for years to come.
* I'd like to extend my gratitude to CEO|Alex Jebailey, Filipino Champ, ApologyMan, and EG|Justin Wong for taking the time to share their thoughts. Thank you all for being active representatives of the fighting game community.
