In a recent interview with the Capcom UK team, MCV took the time to sit down with commercial director Andy Davis and head of marketing Antoine Molant to pick the brains of the folks behind the games we know and love.
Although Capcom had a giant year of releases planned for 2012, many of their titles did not do quite as well as the company had hoped. Because of the sub-par performance of such titles as Street Fighter X Tekken and Resident Evil 6, Capcom needed to overhaul their mindset behind game releases in the years that followed -- which is exactly what they did.
"Our company chairman realized that maybe we weren’t trading on the seal of quality we used to,” commercial director Andy Davis explains.
“So we decided to rejig development, but do it at a time when the new formats were coming through and install bases are low - well that was the theory, no-one saw them coming out of the gates the way that they did.”
Now, Capcom is looking to focus their energy and revenue on the larger products and "triple-A brands." This year, we'll be seeing some of the company's most popular franchises return, but there is one title in particular that we're clearly keeping a closer eye on than the others -- Street Fighter 5. Rest assured, Capcom has some big plans for the next installment in the Street Fighter franchise.
As MCV points out, this is a very active time for fighting games. With Mortal Kombat X, Tekken 7, and even a new installment of Dead or Alive 5 (which drops tomorrow) on the horizon, you'd think Capcom would be a bit worried about the success of their next fighting title. Based on the following statement from Capcom UK's commercial director, it looks like it's quite the opposite, actually.
“Not to be arrogant, but Street Fighter seems to operate on a level of its own within that genre."
The UK team feels that the Street Fighter franchise has a mass appeal, and as seen with Street Fighter 4, has the ability to bring in players who haven't touched a video game in years. But not only will Capcom be aiming to draw in newcomers, they're also putting a heavy focus on the eSports scene.
In this month's issue of Play Magazine, Capcom UK's new community manager Matt Edwards stated that the company is committed to the growth of the community and giving the tournament players a real incentive to push the game further. The two representatives sang a similar tune here, saying that for Street Fighter 5, eSports is where it's at.
"The League of Legends of the world are the top played games in eSports, but we feel we can grow that market for fighting games massively, and that is what we are looking at with Street Fighter V. But having said that, at its core Street Fighter is a game you play with your mates on the same sofa, having a laugh after a night out.”
From the look of things, Street Fighter 5 will have a heavy focus on tournament play, and once the game finally hits store shelves, we'll undoubtedly see it join the Capcom Pro Tour, making the game's competitive scene that much stronger.
