I've been musing lately about the not so good ole days when I used to spend time in certain sub-cultures like gaming. [Back in SRK days] or versus and anime fandom. When it suddenly hit me that those days sucked and while I'll always enjoy the aforementioned hobby. Imo spending your time with people who improve your life is important and I think too many times we end up wasting our limited time on earth with people who add nothing of value to our lives. Communities as well, especially dysfunctional ones. I think most of the sub-cultures that form around pop-culture honestly suck.

The communities for most things are terrible. Large forums are horrible and full of morons even if you have the exceptional member. Simply too much bickering and nonsense. I remember back in 05 when I was on KMC and I was the most respected/feared debater at the time. Sure those times were funny and whatever but I could never go back to it because it doesn't lead to anything. Best to be around others who add something to you or are where you want to be. Wasting it with morons and doing unproductive stuff is meh. Most people are idiots in real life too though. Forums have their uses when it comes to finding information, but I've just learned to separate them from anything else because otherwise it's just stupidity beyond that.

I was thinking more of the sub-culture in general. Forums are stupid because being an uidiot has no irl repercussions:Getting fired, punched in the face or trouble with the law. I mean fandom irl in general, I just don't see what's the point of many of these communities. Like what are they adding to anyones life outside of discussing video games. I can do that with my friends.

I can do that with my friends. People have a need to associate with others or a strong desire to. People share information and interests. The problem is you have the dumb mob who follows the crowd and doesn't know much ruining things, this is who most media is catered to. People who are smart and knowledgeable fans are a good thing though IMO.

Yeah, but you don't think some sub-cultures are prone to more problems than others? From the surface, Cross-fit looks much more healthy then gaming. Probably because they're doing something productive [Taking care of themselves] and aren't socially awkward. I love Video Games, but alot of the people in it come off as autistic losers, I'm sorry. Remember when you mentioned Smash fandom and how they looked? Not trying to push the whole Gamers are losers meme, but it doesn't seem wrong.

Like I said I think sitting on your ass and watching sports all day is no better than playing video games all day. Getting up and being physically active is a good thing to engage in an a productive use of time. Even in fitness in MA though you still have hardcore idiots and fanboys. Crossfit is ok overall though I question the effectiveness of a lot of it. Much like Yoga I think people still engage in trends and try to dick measure each other. Even in those cases I think the classics are the best. But yea I've often said nerds are worse than jocks in many cases and it's true. They tend to be sore losers, petty, and have awful social skills in many cases. People who are in sports learn sportsmanship and teamwork, even when they are competitive. Many gamers are people who just don't want to do anything with themselves.

Right now it's so Chic to be a nerd. But, I've always found nerds to be the most unpleasant people. Very bitter and angry people who are awkward as hell. Plus the sub-culture hardly produces anything productive. Because the people are lazy or lack talent. It's just mindless consumption.

I've had friends who were nerds. They didn't have many friends but they just wanted to play video games all of the time. I liked games too, don't get me wrong but I liked a lot of other things. They were often sore losers too and didn't want to do anything even as adults. Just sit on their ass. People like to say things like "the nerds will take over and be rich". Well some do well, but most just sit in their mom's basement whereas people who were more rounded and had social skills did well for themselves. Some nerds do neat programming or things like that, the rest are just lazy bums trying to escape, much like people who sit on their ass and watch sports.

Like seriously, someone who just sits down and consumes media all the day is interesting how? And, the worst part is they think they're better than non-nerds. It's just pathetic time wasting.

Well there's nothing wrong with it here and then, but I don't know. I guess most people will never do more than eat, sleep, crap and spend time trying to escape from the cycle. Hence the neediness.
