From another thread:
My Uncle went back home to the Caribbean for a while and one of his observations is that there are certain goods, such as soaps, creams, food and other products that you can't find in the U.S. but are of the highest quality and come from all over the world. There are even cars that haven't reached our market yet, but people are riding around in them. Even though they're anecdotes I suspect that they're true. Most likely tariffs and the FDA or other protectionist policies are keep these good products out. America is no longer the land of the free or milk and honey. The quality in everything from our goods, services and even women haved dropped dramatically. The price on the otherhand has exploded, they tax everything and keep good products out so were forced to buy their shitty made in china products which we let flood the country. [Funny, my parents country despite being poor isn't swamped with cheap made in china goods] and they're taxing you to leave. Get out while you can.

I can't completely blame other countries because America benefits from their innovation and productivity, especially when it comes to things like electronics. The truth is very little is made here because we can't afford anything. We have many cheap goods and crappy food because people are poorer and we hide it by making the prices the same and using lower quality.

Well, I was just blaming China. But, I thought it was because of tariffs? Because even small and poor Caribbean countries have high quality goods that I cannot find here. So, is it because of taxing and protectionist policies as well?

So, is it because of taxing and protectionist policies as well? China made goods are cheap because there's a demand for them. In our prime we had the best goods at the lowest prices and the highest wages. Expensive specialty products are more rare and are something you'd go to a specialty store to or find online. I know what you mean about finding those obscure items though.
