Shame they can't get it right. www.ign.com/articles/2015/08/09/fantastic-four-flops-in-box-office-debutBY JIM VEJVODAMarvel's First Family couldn't overcome blistering reviews, months of bad publicity, and its own director's troublemaking tweet as Fantastic Four opened well below expectations this weekend.
20th Century Fox's reboot had initially been projected to open in first place with anywhere from $30-$40 million, but instead settled for a second place bow with an estimated $26.2 million.
The superhero movie, which reportedly cost at least $120 million to produce plus tens of millions more to market, will surely need to prove fantastic at the international box office if it's to not prove a sizable bomb for the studio.
Spoilercast 24:04 Last weekend's champ, Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation, remained No. 1 with an estimated $29.4 million.
Of the weekend's other new releases, the thriller The Gift fared the best, opening in third place with $12 million. Ricki and the Flash, starring Meryl Streep, opened in limited release in seventh place with about $7 million, while Aardman Animations' Shaun the Sheep was a big disappointment with roughly $4 million for 11th place.
Here are the weekend estimates BoxOffice.com:
1. Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation $29.4 million
2. Fantastic Four $26.2 million
3. The Gift $12 million
4. Vacation $9.1 million
5. Ant-Man $7.8 million
6. Minions $7.4 million
7. Ricki and the Flash $7 million
8. Trainwreck $6.3 million
9. Pixels $5.4 million
10. Southpaw $4.8 million

Saw this coming a mile away. The only thing saving fantastic four would be a cross over with the X-Men that fox has planned.

The movie doesn't look great tbh. Even with obscure characters like with guardians of the galaxy. You still had a good movie. Because they went the funny route.

I haven't seen this yet so I can't really comment. But the changes that they make, with each reboot, seems to be stupid.

It has to be the corporate big wigs telling the director and writers what makes a good movie.
Like Venom in SM3.

They miss the point of the Fantastic Four. Their supposed to be a family of adventurers from the Space Race with the Soviet Union. I think one of the resons why the Fantastic four fell into the way side is the themes of family and American exceptionalism have been swept aside. X-men does good because it deals with racism and that's always popular FF not so much. The film creators didn't get that so it ended up being just another Cape film.

Another cape film that attempted to be dark and gritty.

They should have just kept to the source material.

They should have just kept to the source material. They were trying to "make change" it seems.

I am watching this right now. The movie is half over and it's just not good.
I have lots of complaints, but it's not important at this point. Maybe the next one will be good.

Bad pacing.
Bad character development.
Too far away from the source material. (Not even a black Johnny, that isn't even a detriment in my eyes)
The story isn't interesting.
It's like the characters are just reading from cue cards, like a 5th grader doing his first class presentation.
The actors look far too old to be playing teenagers.
It was just a waste of 120 million or whatever they spent.
I really wanted to like it. I didn't mind the 2005 F4 movie, but the second one just plain sucked.
I don't understand why they can't get it right. It's almost like they intentionally want to make a turd of a movie.

That's just shameful in this day and age with what they're spending on these movies. Was it bad in the sense that they didn't develop or that they developed unrealistically?

They just didn't develop. They had too many characters to try and get scene time. I think tying Doom into their origin story each time actually hurts their individual development.
We never really get to see Ben being the sad monster, or Reed carrying the weight of the world knowing he turned everyone he cares about into freaks. We don't see how Sue brings everyone together to be the family that they need to be. We do get to see a little of Johnny being a brash young hot head, but not enough in my opinion.
They should think of it as a trilogy. Where Doom is the end boss of the third movie. Introduce his character in the first. Expand on him in the second, and have the culmination at the 3rd.
Their is some 40 years worth of villains for the F4 to defeat in a movie. Doom isn't the only enemy that might need vanquishing. The first villain can be someone simple like mole man. Dude lives underground and controls giant monsters.
I'm just glad that I didn't pay anything for this movie. That would have ticked me off.

It would be nice if we saw other FF villains other than doom with a buildup to him. Maybe Doom could have started out as somewhat decent and misunderstood, and then develop into that. Wouldn't be bad if they could pull it off. Doing a worse more PC version of the same thing is meh.

Which is sad because FF has one off the best Rogue's gallery in comics. They always mess up Doom, though.

All anybody knows is Doom (outside of serious fans). If they gave FF more love this wouldn't be a problem. They just aren't as "cool" a the X-Men though.
