People often use the desire to have more things for a motivation for achieving more. There's nothing wrong with this at all; I think it's a good idea. The problem with just going *for* the stuff is you often end up with the item and then you get used to it like anything else, and then you look for something else to get as the chase is over, and many people want a lot of things and when they get used to them it becomes another thing to go into the junk pile. Look at how many women shot constantly because they "have to have" the latest thing, and then it just sits around collecting dust. Today's "gotta have" is tomorrow's "gotta go".
For instance many people want a car and they go out and buy one. Once they have one it becomes another thing they have and are used to. They call them "truck divorces" because it gets old and you've already had it. Just like a woman.
Many times just fantasizing about having these things and wanting them is enough because it leaves some mystery there and you can always imagine yourself having it. Often this is better than actually having it as you don't have to deal with the costs and the downsides.
It's like these video games that come out. Many people rush out and get them right away, so they can be the first person in on the latest trend. It's definitely more tempting to get these games when they're new, but you know they'll eventually go down in price tremendously and the bugs and issues will be addressed. I have bought many games that I was excited about at one point that ended up drifting off as you played it and I found the games I bought early on had the most problems and bugs. Those ended up being the biggest disappointments. When I waited for a while and got it on sale, it was a better experience and I ended up playing it much more. Even if you do get something it's often better to wait, and many times you're better off going without.
