This is an interesting discussion. 2d fighters took off in the 90's full steam ahead with many copycat titles and then started to wane a bit when 3d fighters gained more popularity in the late 90's and early 2000's. After the revival of fighting games, 2d is mainly at the top. Which do you prefer and what skills do you think each sub-genre emphasizes? Which is harder?

Loaded question here haha. 3D fighters exploded when PS1 was released and PS1 killed the arcades in america. No need to shovel out endless quarters to play games anymore since PS1 had near arcade graphics. For the Ps3/360 gens 2D felt harder than 3D for me, but I am a 3D guy. Tekken felt much harder than Killer Instinct or SF2 back in the day, Alpha series was very challenging and extremely fun. 3D might be harder for 2D guys and vice verse, or maybe not. Apples and oranges kind of games to me, but both are enjoyable if done well. SF5 is easier than any other 2D game and any other 3D game not called Dead or Alive.

Well even the console port of Alpha 3 was inferior to the arcade, Dreamcast, and Saturn as those systems had stronger hardware but failed as systems. It was mega successful though so you're right about people playing fighters more at home. I think 3d fighters were just the new novelty. Different playstyle, ringouts, and "it looked kewler!". Now it seems to have bounced back. I think that 2d and 3d emphasize different skills, but you also have different levels of fighters. Hardcore stuff like VF and Kof, and then more casual stuff like MK and Soul Calibur. Check this video out.

Lol Jaxel, he was part of the VF community around launch of VF5FS and is a very low level VF player, it's nice he supports the game but he's trash at VF and isn't taken seriously in the western VF scene, we just laugh. Not interested in watching his videos i'm sorry, he also has a beef with Henry Cen at Next Level and next level supports offline VF in NYC for many years now, so again not interested in Jaxel.

His video was more on how he had an easier time learning the basics in it vs 2d fighters where he struggled with execution. I think it makes sense from that perspective as he's talking about a beginner level.
You were saying something similar about having a hard time with the execution of 2d fighters at first too, I think most people probably feel the same way.
