So you like the characters, the writing, and the themes? What kind of themes could we expect from this show? Hmmm. I don't want to just blurt out Friendship and Family but that is a pretty big theme. Love also plays a big part. I guess Humanity is the big one, It's just Human, very human kinda raw at times. Being Lost and Found, finding your true self and so on. These are all themes in it. Finding the good in people is also a big part. I've never been asked what the themes are in it, type of people I talk to usually just ask "Good fight scenes?" Black Lagoon isn't for someone that just wants good fight scenes though there isn't enough in it if that's what people want. What about this for a theme? I'm just kidding but this now is as far as the show goes with symbolism. These two love each other but they'll never "love" each other. So it has a blend of action, comedy, and fanservice? How is the voice acting? Do you watch it dubbed or subbed?

So it has a blend of action, comedy, and fanservice? How is the voice acting? Do you watch it dubbed or subbed? Dubbed all the way. Everybody agrees it's much better. In the sub they start speaking English when they go to Japan because Revy can't speak Japanese so she speaks English but she had been speaking Japanese before this otherwise it wouldn't need to be subtitled. Plus Revy's Japanese voice actress is pretty bad, I haven't heard the other characters but trust me Dubbed is the way to go and the way the Creator of the Manga wanted it. There is fanservice but it's not over the top and all of it is in character. They never throw an upskirt or cleavage shot just because they need to fill some sort of quota. Breasts do bounce but breasts bounce all the time in real life. This Anime might have the least amount of fanservice I've seen, until you get to the OVA then there's several shower scenes and everyones breasts seem to be a lot bigger. When somebody says Fanservice anime I always think of Highschool of the Dead, it's nothing like that. If you've seen Claymore it's comparable to that but less shots of side bust. I like fanservice but not when it gets in the way, for me HIghschool of the Dead it didn't get in the way because that Anime is pretty much Fanservice the Anime. It does have Comedy but most episodes are quite serious and other episodes focus on the comedy. I like when shows have good dubs because I can watch them on the go and when I'm multitasking/driving. Otherwise it takes much more effort to watch. It's why I love shows like YYH because the dub is so good. Many OVA's crank it up in the fanservice category. They also have higher production values so it's not surprising.

Many OVA's crank it up in the fanservice category. They also have higher production values so it's not surprising. I'm not complaining, I just didn't want you to get the wrong impression about the anime. When the OVA was made a different company handled the dub but they got the same director, writers and cast. They knew how important the english voice acting was for this. You can tell several years passed between the ending of the series and the OVA but everybody is still really good in it. Oh no it's fine. I watch a wide variety stuff and I have no problem with comedy, action, or fanservice anime as long as it is well done. Queen's Blade is well done and it does tilt in the fanservice direction, but it has a great story and characters as well. Is this anime a long one?

Is this anime a long one? I think it's 24 or 26 episodes long and a 5 part OVA. The main series is typical anime episode length at around 20 minutes and the OVA is around 30 minutes a pop, I think one is 40 minutes. So I guess it's about the same as every other Anime that isn't like Naruto or Bleach (forgot what people call the anime that goes on forever.) I think that's good. Keeps the story nice and concise without all of the filler.

She's a crazy tomboy. I might watch tonight. There's a funny joke involving a Nazi, I won't spoil it for you just in case you do watch it soon but I think it's in episode 5 or 6 and it's the type of joke Quentin Tarantino would come up with. Do you like his movies?

YEAH! I don't want to oversell Black Lagoon but Quentin Tarantino would be the perfect choice to write and direct a movie adaptation. He has an extreme style but he is definitely very popular.

I wouldn't let that put you off because Black Lagoon isn't the same as his stuff it's just if somebody told you Tarantino had something to do with it you would believe them. Oh I don't mind either way lol. Did you like Django?

That's a hard question... I can't name my favourite so I'd have to say Kill Bill Volume 1, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Death Proof are my favourites, then Inglorious Basterds, then Django. I haven't seen his others but I'm really looking forward to Hateful Eight, shame it doesn't come out till January over here. Pulp Fiction? You went up one cool point!

You're taking it to the next level. How do you like the leader of the Lagoon group? Dutch is awesome, the voice actor look's a hell of a lot like the character. I think he's a really interesting character, I can't think of an Anime character that acts like him at all or even has a similar personality. The way he talks, there's a bit in a future episode where he says something like "Employee and Employer relationship is my top priority. That's why we're having a day off, if you aren't happy with me or yourself then we aren't working one hundred percent." That's not the exact quote and it's probably nothing like that haha, but he just goes into this speech about how important work relationship is, but he goes really into it, it's not a comedic moment or a daft moment it's a real intelligent moment, it makes you question how Dutch ended up like this and Rock also questions why this group of people all act the way they do. This BIG MUSCLY HUNKY MAN doesn't pretend to be tough or intelligent, he is tough but he doesn't act like a typical leader of pirates, he acts more like a polite businessman, who has a shotgun and a sexy psycho with him. I always like a cool businessman character, can definitely relate and he seems smooth. What about the protagonist?

I've never thought of him as the protagonist, he's always been the audience, or at least supposed to be the audience. Boring life, gets captured by pirates, wants to stay with the pirates, wants the girl (kinda it's more complicated than that) wants an exciting life but at the same time he gets frustrated by it all because it's new, dangerous and uncomfortable. There's a reason we only hear his narration and if I remember correctly in the OVA we don't hear his narration because Rock has finally become his own character. Often the audience surrogate is the main guy who's trying to fit into a new "odd" world. Who do you think is the protagonist then?

They all go together so well that the show just wouldn't be anywhere near as good if it wasn't for the group. Rock probably gets the most screen time so I guess in those terms he is the lead, but to me it's the whole company with a focus on Revy, she's the one that Rock is infatuated with and she's the one that the majority of the audience will end up getting hooked on. She's the love interest.

She's the love interest. She's my love interest fuck off! Seriously though she's more than a love interest, she's the romantic interest of Rock but that's not her only role in the show. She's the only one of the Lagoon Company that is fully developed, has backstory that is explored and has a character arc. Love interests fight often in shows nowadays. It's all good man. I wasn't dissing your girlfriend.

Seriously though Revy isn't just the love interest, many consider he the main character and Rock never gets with her, it's a much more complicated relationship then "Is he gonna get the girl?" And I know you're trolling me right now but if you watch Black Lagoon treating Revy as just the love interest is a massive disservice to the writers and voice actress, she's one of the best anime characters ever, the fact she's sexy just makes it better. She is a romantic interest. I mean the show isn't a romantic show, but they at least partly play up the tension, even for laughs. You can also be a love interest and already be in a relationship with the character. Why do you think the love interest is bad? I think many times people get upset because they see themselves with the characters (which is why the guy often doesn't "get" the girl in stories like these, it's to give the fans hope), but a character can be a love interest and still play an active role in the story, male or female. For instance Hawkgirl and Green Lantern, Batman and Wonder Woman, Videl was this for Gohan, Keiko for Yusuke. Etc. Supergirl has Jimmy Olsen. There's nothing wrong with it. You're sounding like the SJW's. "She's just a love interest and it's demeaning!!!" Chillax bro. I'm not going to take her from you.

Nothing wrong with just being a love interest in a story, Revy's role is much bigger than that, to sum it up as love interest gives the wrong impression about her and her relationship with Rock. They love each other, they are together but they may never be truly together, the only time they kiss it's using cigarettes to light and there's a reason it's the ends of the cigarettes touching and not their lips. Yes their relationship is a big part of the show but to just call her the love interest devalues her character. She isn't a bond girl that's only there for James Bond to fall in love with and disappear the next movie. You know I'm not one of the SJW's and I have absolutely nothing against characters only being there for a romance subplot, eye candy or whatever, the only time that annoys me is when it starts to get in the way of the actual story and characters. The whole reason Megan Fox is in Transformers is so people will lust after her but I'm like "Ok you're hot, now show me Optimus." or "Stop taking budget away from my Transformer Fights!" What you said about the guy not getting the girl, I've wondered that myself, if it's to try and lure people in and make them fall in love with the characters. Have you heard about the Denzel Washington controversy? He was with a white woman in a movie and a big portion of his black female fans got really really angry and since then he said he's only going to be with black women on screen, he's only broken that rule once since he announced that. The problem came in that I never said she was *just* a love interest. I just said she played the role of one. You assumed that, which is why I was teasing you about knee jerking. I know you aren't one of them but that's the same logic they use where they say being a love interest is demeaning. It's not. There are plenty of love interests like Fujiko Mine from Lupin the 3rd who are awesome. It's not a bad thing in the leaste.

Okay but when somebody typically calls a character a "love interest" that character tends to be secondary to everything in the show/movie. I mean we all know she fights a lot (even I can see that just by looking) so why assume that? If I said she was the "sexy girl" nobody would assume it. Lol. It's ok man. You can have her, I give up.

Anyways, what's your favorite episode? Season 1 - The Nazi episodes and the Roberta episodes. Season 2 - Japan episodes and the Hansel and Gretel (or vampire twins) episodes. I haven't got any favourite episodes in the OVA because it plays like a movie cut into 5 parts. Out of everything it's probably somewhere between Roberta and Japan. Can't decide. Do you like Nazi's a lot character wise?
