Ok it needs to be said. Black people LOVE this show. Back when I was in middle school *way* back in the day I used to draw them (since drawing them was the pinnacle of art back then, heh). When I went to my hometown I was a superstar amongst black people for drawing them. They praised my name for months.
So is there a particular reason this show is popular in the black culture? What do you think?

What do you think? Is there a reason? I mean I love anime and I'm white. I love Will Smith movies (most of his movies) and I'm white. I do see a lot of black people who love Dragon Ball Z though, what if it's just random? It's been a long time since I've watched DBZ does it have any black characters? I know Naruto and Bleach have one or two, also do you think including black characters would of changed it's popularity? Would more black guys of loved DBZ if Krillin was black? Why do you like DBZ? I liked it because of the monsters, aliens, fighting and Goku. Here's the best black anime character ever I don't know, but there have been black people who've said that DBZ resonates with them. www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=25992&sid=974e55cadfdb0dddffe39324690d260f&start=20thedaoofdragonball.com/blog/history/the-black-goku/thedaoofdragonball.com/blog/history/the-black-goku/I always saw that female character as ambiguously brown. Many of them are hard to spot. Are they Indian? Black? Hispanic? Who knows? Reminds me of K' in Kof.

Because of bootlegging. Back before widespread internet, most hood dudes would and still bootleg to watch stuff. Comics are alot more expensive per issue. So, you have to jave cash for that. Anime is cheap: To produce and has poor copyright protection like most Asian media. So, it's easy to procure and distribute illegally.
Kung fu movies were really popular in the hood for the same reasons. Wutang clan was influenced by these types of kung fu shows and they also watch dbz. I used to watch dbz booyleg tapes as well. It's also why dbz is popular in the third world.
I once called Goku a third world Superman and people got so mad lol.

Manga is cheaper to produce because they produce a huge amount of volumes in a short amount of time to keep up with anime runs. So even then it can add up and most people are just too lazy to read, they watch tv. Even people on section 8 have television and people who were into DBZ watched it before they read it 99% of the time. I think one major reason is back when I was a teen, DBZ was seen as "cool". It could just be that people saw classic heroes like Superman as "corny" and Goku and Vegeta were just more "hardcore" and "badass". Remember that talk we had before. Being "badass" and cool just matters to boy and in much of black culture they saw it as cooler, at least in the... low brow community.

Manga is essentially black and white comics printed on phonebook paper. Comics use full color and high quality paper. Comics are also collectors items while most manga magazine are disposable minus the graphic novels/tankobons when people want to collect the individual stories.
Superman is definitely see as corny. Dbz was fairly violent when compared to American cartoons. Nothing graphic of course. But, definitely edgier. Plus it was overstylized and to a 13 year old that is cool. I find older like Batman Tas and the adventures of Superman to be more enjoyable for adults. They are much mote slow paced and plot driven than dbz.

Right, because mangas are made on a much quicker time scale and cut the costs to mass produce them. They release soooooo many mangas whereas comics are more timed with their arcs. That's also why the animation is cheaper. But yea, classic red, white, and blue characters were just seen as old fashioned and lame. Kids want to be badass and DBZ had "nonstop action", lol. I think it was dumbed down and more simple to get, which is why more complicated anime/manga isn't as popular. DBZ had nothing to ponder or think about. Just hitting and yelling lol.
