Still cashing his checks: 'Adult baby' who wears diapers and drinks from a bottle is cleared of fraud... and STILL getting his disability benefits
He is the 30 year old who wears a diaper, sleeps in a crib and feeds from a bottle while receiving more than $800 a month in disability cheques, to live out his fantasies without a care in the world.
But a TV appearance earlier this year, which showed Stanley Thornton Jr doing woodwork, cast doubts over his disabilities and he was investigated for fraud.
The Social Security Administration have now cleared Thornton of any wrongdoing, and will continue to provide him with disability benefit checks.
He says the investigation ruined the last living months of his room mate Sandra Dias, who acted as his 'mother', bottle feeding him and encouraging his child-like ways until her death in July.
'My best friend Sandra had to spend the last 3 months of her life being accused of something she didn’t do. Having her family and 3 kids seeing her accused on the nightly news of something she didn’t do,' he wrote on his website.
Thornton, whose condition is called paraphilic infantilism, first became known when his life was featured on the National Geographic channel television show 'Taboo: Fantasy Lives'.
In the show he is shown designing and building an adult size crib and furniture, work which prompted Mr Coburn to question why he was receiving taxpayer-funded disability checks,
Thornton also runs a website, www.BedWettingABDL.com, for others who play-act as babies, wear diapers or wet their beds.
He was employed as a security guard for a year and a half but now says he is unable to work because of trauma stemming from childhood abuse, combined with other mental and physical problems.
The TV show, he claims, overstated his abilities.
John Hart, a spokesman for Mr. Coburn, told the Washington Times that the senator, also a doctor, is still confused as to how 'a grown man who is able to design and build adult-sized baby furniture is eligible for disability benefits.'
'Yet, the problem is not with Mr. Thornton, per se, but with the politicians and bureaucrats who have coddled him,' Mr. Hart said. 'Disability fraud effectively steals from those who are truly disabled, while weakening the economy for everyone.'
Mr Hart passed his condolences over the death of Miss Dias.
When The Times first contacted Mr. Thornton about the investigation, he threatened suicide, saying he had “no problem killing myself” if his benefits were stopped.
'Take away the last thing keeping me here, and see what happens. Next time you see me on the news, it will be me in a body bag,' he said.
The senator also asked why Miss Dias, a former nurse, collects benefits, 'since she is able to provide childcare' to Mr Thornton.
According to Thornton's website, Miss Dias was also cleared.
