This is true, very VERY true. For the most part the only person you can truly count on is yourself. If you rely on others then you won't reach your full potential.

I think a more disturbing thing is that people keep others around as a "backup plan" in case something goes wrong. Just like people who have kids so they can be "taken care of" when they get old, or when they get married so "someone will be there", many times people just keep people around so they can mooch off of them later. If they just took care of themselves this wouldn't be an issue.

The whole "we're in this together" mentality is exactly like this. People who believe in this tend to be dead weight and like to get angry at you if you refuse to do it anymore.

Family tends to be the most resentful of success and don't want you to change. People don't want to see you surpass them so they try to sabotage you by guilt tripping.

Not worth it for me to keep people around "Just cause they're family" if they're dead weight and taking all the time. What's the point?
