What do you all think about Superman/boy Prime? Love him(like me), hate him, couldn't give a damn? I just figured I would make a thread for DC's greatest current threat.

What appeals you to him so much? Unlike a certain blue boy scout, he doesn't hold back, he uses his powers like he should, he is insane to a degree that surpasses even Joker, he is consistently written, he has a good backstory and has a reason for his state of mind.

Holding back isn't necessarily bad to me if it's written well.

I like his character, but I wish they did more with him than turn him into a deranged villain.

I mean't in terms of characterization. I would have loved to see what his character could become over a period of time and those transitional periods.

Which is the problem with most DC characters sans Batman, they need more depth. My faves are Flash and Supergirl btw.

I was big into DC for a while when I first got into comics. But, I kinda drifted into marvel after watching some old Marvel Super Heroes cartoons.

Do the characters just relate to you more?

I dunno they were just more down to earth in how they came off, It felt alot more believe then the spandex wearing Gods that DC had back then. They also felt more three dimensional in the sense that they aren't just heroes their to save the day. They are super powered workers in a sense, like Iron Man is a Body Gaurd for Stark industry and defends it from from rival corporations and Industrial Saboteurs or Cap who works for the Government and is a WW2 war hero, or Thor who is a God who chooses to interfere in mortal affairs because he loves the earth. It isn't simply good guy bad guy in Marvel. Many heroes in marvel are hated and treated like menaces and this adds a new dimension to them. I think DC and Marvel now adays are basically the same. But, back in their haydays Marvel was truly more innovative.

I agree wholeheartedly. The characters had flaws. Iron Man is an alcoholic and he is truly a "man that has everything and nothing". Spiderman life sucks, which is why he's the most easy to relate to. But he needed something to come home to which is why I hate what they did to Mary Jane. The XMen are hated, Wolverine has his issues. They aren't "perfect" which is why people like them more.

Yeah, back then Marvel really had much more likable heroes because they had to not only deal with villains. But, the public which has mixed feelings for heroes. DC Heroes are worshiped in their worlds.
Quesada has turned marvel into a joke, which is why read comics from marvel far less if not at all. Nothing beats the good ol' days, even if alot of crap was produced in the 90's. . .Still beats the current pile of crap writers keep churning out. . ."House of Idea's" my arse.

Well, there are some good new ones I agree: Storm Breaker arc seems great. But, I just cannot get into the universe overall, it seems way too different.

The heroes seem too dark and cycnical in a very disturbing way. It feels like one over grown Snuff film at times full of unecessary drama with a barrel of real world grit. I like realism and I feel some characters work well with that kind of writing: Punisher, Wolverine, Batman and sometimes Dare-Devil. But, I think it gets outta hand when it seems that the writers sole goal is to make things as stone cold as possible. Hell, even the 90's where everything was extreme felt sensational in a way. Maybe because you wouldn't see the kinda of stuff they put into mainstream titles now back then unless your reading: Punisher, Wolverine, Batman, Venom, Dare-devil or Vertigo comic. I just do not feel that now a days. I miss the smiling heroes of the silver and bronze age. Sure there was a touch of realism and heroes have always been political. I just feel that they've turned it up to eleven. www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.1632.Weekend_Preview:_New_Avengers_%2335I just miss when things were fun.

I like the older days for what they were, but I like the newer days as well, and that they're willing to talk about more real life stuff without fear of what others think. Tony Stark was a lot different in the 60's than he is now. I like the old one in his ways and the new one in his. I don't believe however in extreme content for the sake of it. Things like Spiderman have been enjoyable to me regardless of how "normal" it is. But isn't that from a Max comic?

I see were your coming from, but I just can't get into it when it comes to mainstream marvel doing things like that. I enjoy the fact that we can explore area's that couldn't be explored before and I feel that the new ways of doing things as well and it can be very enjoyable if done right. But, I'm just not feeling it in mainstream marvel-verse. Like I said I think it works with certain characters, but overall it doesn't do it for me when it comes to mainstream marvel. I mean I think they should just tell stories like always did rather then just doing things like that for a reaction. Maybe it's because 616 has been so stale late when compared to say the Ultimate titles which uses the content that I dislike in 616 and works well with it.

Well I don't think Marvel should become the next Jerry Springer, but we should definitely make the characters easier to relate to than they were then in more personal ways, give them more serious flaws and things like that, it isn't even about the adult content so much really.

I see what your saying and I agree. But, it doesn't even seem to be about making them human anymore IMO. Rather it's about making them as controversail as ever which is sad.

Imo Superboy Prime is something akin to Godzilla: ridiculous and over the top. If I were to write him I would probably plot device to make him giant and throw fire from his mouth. Seriously, the time in he went Superman Prime was nothing else than a transformation to make him even more absurd. Should every character be serious and deep? I don't really think so, I think some characters are meant to stay stupid, even if it makes them somewhat one trick ponnies, they can still be well written.

Yea, over the top can work for some instances, but over and over it starts to get stale.
