So I saw a video of someone playing Street Fighter V on their Sprint Mobile Hotspot. He had a stream with Alex Valle and the results were amazing. He had no problems doing it.
Curious, I decided to try it myself. I'm on the road quite a bit at times and it would be really nice to game on the go without having to worry about finding spots or being in areas that were inconvenient. I could sit in the shade or even go indoors if necessary.
After doing some research and talking to the other person that did it, I find that playing games online uses very little data. In fact downloading and browsing pages uses much more. Most estimates were around 40mb an hour. I have tons of data to spare as I use under 1 GB a month. Usually around 400 MB or so.
Nonetheless I give it a try today when I'm out. Once I optimized everything on my PC the whole thing ran smoothly. I had excellent results with in SF4 provided the person had a good machine and was in America. I had a person who had an E grade system and that match was horrible.
I also tried Skullgirls as well. It ran brilliantly in America though the European connection lagged.
So in my conclusion as long as I play American players and they have good internet it should be solid. I was able to land one frame links and everything with Evil Ryu as well. I'm quite impressed with the results.
I'll definitely do more extensive testing when SF5 hits as there will be a new pool of players. The ability to play without hassle on the road and also to play literally anywhere like at the park where it is quiet in the shade without having to worry about getting near a signal or setting near a glare is really great.
I can't guarantee the same results for everyone in every situation of course but if you want to game on the go it doesn't hurt to try. Just monitor your data usage and see what you get. I played around 3 hours and had 111 mb of usage.
Interesting experiments lead to interesting results.
