There's a big uproar over their being two smash games on the main stage. Here are some highlights from the comment section:
"The smash community had a 15-20% overlap at events like APEX and EVO last year. They aren't getting special treatment, they're not the same game and barely the same community. I don't like or care about smash but people need to stop using this "fact" a evidence of a supposed double standard.
SF is nowhere near as dispersed. By and large the majority of people that would play 4 would be there for 5 and logistically it can't be done for ~2000 people with a majority shared player pool, on the same console no less. Smaller events like CEO can afford to host both because it got around 400 for SF4 last year. Go there for your Ultra fix in necessary or host a side tourney. Complaining solves nothing."
"Anime have their own dedicated events too. So do Capcom games. So does KI, NRS or whatever else. I'm not seeing the relevance of bring up Smash's events. Again you're not getting the point that their isn't a Smash "community". It's too very largely different pools of players that happen to play a game that shares title name and some characters. Lumping them both together is dumb when they are both towing their weight as individual scenes.
Also does either Marvel game bring ~2000 people to anything? No. Did Marvel 2 players keep their game alive independently for 15+ years to make a statement that they deserve main stage time or that there's still major interest in the game? Double no. Then you have your answer. Both Smash games bring 1500+ individual non crossover people to an event, get way more entrants than even the next closest title and thus expand the scope of EVO. It's not rocket science to see why both get included."

What do you guys think of EVO 2016 line up? Marvel bleh. We all know this is just advertising at this point. Smash fans get to double dip. They're about as die hard as Sf.

It's interesting how hardcore Melee fans are to the point that Melee is it's own community separate from the Smash 4 community.

Smash is pretty cool. I think as a fighter it got alot of flak from elitist SF fanboys that the fanbase has become ultra defensive about how deep it is. It's definitely one of those "dream match" games and has alot of flow between casual and hardcore. Out of the flagship fighters [Nintendo: Smash, Microsoft: KI and Sony: Street Fighter.] It's the most interesting imo right now.

It's both; other players hated on it and the fanboys were just so diehard saying that Melee is just the deepest game EVER and never shut up about it. I had many Melee players as friends back in the day and that's all they went on about It is interesting. It gets by on name more than any other fighter, SF and MK do too though.

I feel Smash overall is bigger than Mk and SF. In the sense that it has a large casual and hardcore following. Mk and Sf usually have one or the other.

I think they have a casual following that cares more about the hardcore stuff. SF has a huge casual base but the Smash base is difference because it caters to character fans. I wouldn't put it in the same category of fighter as I would put the other two in anyways.
