I was having this discussion yesterday and it seems that modern games tend to be far more grind heavy which I think goes into my earlier point about it being so time consuming. It's like they are designed to eat up your time and to get you to buy content and unlock trophies and achievements.
Competitive style games and multiplayer games are obviously a case of this as people want to get better and show off their "skillz". Ranking and points matter and people want to whore out their ego by having those points even if they have to RQ to do it.
Even single player games are like this. In the old days games were harder but could be done in one sitting and the very few that couldn't had a save feature. It was easy to play an old school game for 35 minutes and get far into it and have to turn the game off and come back with it being no big deal. Modern games have so much fluff and cinematics that you might have 30+ hours of content and people consider 10 hours or so to be "short". These games once you beat them and unlock the trophies or whatever you just return it to gamestop and trade. Modern games were often kept, that said you could rent a game and beat it over the weekend (ah those were the days). With save states it's even easier for me now to play a game and stop at anytime only to resume later. This makes it very appealing as it doesn't eat up into my time.
What do you guys think? Modern games more grind heavy?

Well, we saw that with rank battles in SF5. Honestly, gaming is grindy overall because it has become swamped with superfluous stuff like cinematic cut-scenes and things that take you out of games. Gaming itself has also become to time consuming and I don't really get out of them what I used to. I honestly have had my fill with games, played some of the best gaming franchises: Zelda, Street Fighter, Mario, MGS, etc and I'm content. These days I rather make my own game than just play one.

One thing I like about classic games is that they're in and out. I can jump in and play Battletoads for 30 mins and then I can take a break. I'm then on to something else. When I play SF survival or ranked it feels like an artificial way to soak up time.
What would you make genre wise?
