Came across something good here (Jack, if you run across stuff like this on FB be sure to post it as I don't post on there anymore). Marc MacYoung (a really sound man) wrote this comment: "This is why it is important to distinguish between knowledge and belief. But since belief is open to attack in this culture, people pretend their beliefs are facts, knowledge and unquestionable truths."Do you agree with this statement? Do people often treat their beliefs as truth in a discussion or argument? Can this be fixed?

Macyoung said a couple of things about beliefs, forgot the specifics about what he said but. People have personal beliefs about certain subjects which are part of their self definition and they tend to be emotional about them when they come under attack or something like that.

I think it comes down to people being uninformed and emotional. They "feel" something so it is true.
The problem is not only do they do this in arguments, they also vote on policies that affect everybody by what they "feel" is right. What they feel is right is often something that is actually harmful.

Yeah, confirmation bias and all that. It's just part of being human I suppose. He also stated to recognize when people are arguing from belief vs fact. Arguing someone who does the former is a waste of time.

That's why most arguments are a waste of time. What really gets me is that you can give people the facts and they'll just ignore it and continue to argue anyways. It gets to a point where you need to own them senseless just to get them to go away.

Even owning them to me is a waste of time. Because alot of times ou just got stuck arguing for a long time. I don't have time for that crap anymore..

Exactly. It's like that weird stalker guy. I mean you're debating for days on end writing paragraphs to some dummy who just won't admit their wrong. What I mean was just utterly decimating them, but that can be a big use of energy too. I used to do it way back in the day more often on KMC and the like but I didn't do it there. I put it to an end in that case but I was going to go all out on the next post.
I always hated being dragged into it, but once you're in there you're going back and forward.
