Mel Gibson Too ‘Hateful’ and ‘Misogynistic’ to Direct ‘Suicide Squad 2,’ Say Outraged Film Critics
Mel Gibson is definitely not going to win any awards for nicest person of the year. But should that disqualify him from directing movies?
It appears that Gibson may be bringing his directorial talents to the DC movie universe, and some people aren’t happy about it. Their complaints follow the recent outrage over Gibson’s and Vince Vaughn’s upcoming police movie.

Sources familiar with the superhero franchise told Entertainment Weekly that the Hacksaw Ridge and Apocalypto director met with Warner Bros. this week to talk about a collaboration that would potentially see Gibson directing Suicide Squad 2—a project that has been more or less confirmed for production.

Talks are said to be in the early stages, with the upcoming movie as a leading contender for his directorial debut in the DC universe. Gibson previously called Batman v Superman a “piece of shit” and explained the difference between real superheroes and their comic book counterparts, saying that “real superheroes don’t wear spandex.”

There have been no offers or commitment, but Gibson, who has received widespread acclaim for his prowess as both an actor and director, has long been the subject of condemnation by some people for his conservative politics and for verbally abusing his ex-girlfriend in a recorded phone call.
The director didn’t help himself with anti-semitic comments at a police officer during a DUI arrest in 2006—those remarks have dogged him throughout his recent career despite his apologies.

Writing for Gizmodo, Beth Elderkin highlighted the racist and sexist comments he made more than a decade ago, stating that it was beyond the pale that Warner Bros would even consider hiring Gibson because there’s just no way for him to make up for what he said in the past.

“Honestly, the likelihood of Gibson actually coming onboard is pretty small, but the key thing is they’re considering him,” she writes, while also highlighting the success of Hacksaw Ridge, which received several Oscar nominations.
“Call me crazy, but maybe this isn’t the kind of person who should be helming a multi million-dollar superhero film, especially one with characters who are queer and people of color.”
Nerdist’s Kyle Anderson also expressed objections to seeing Mad Max direct the superhero movie. “The timeline is dark, friends,” he wrote. “Why should we award and heap accolades upon someone who had previously revealed their true colors to be hateful and misogynistic?”

On Twitter, movie reviewer Drew McWeeny set up a poll asking his followers what they thought the most important aspect of Suicide Squad 2’s director would be—and offered “rabid anti-Semitism” as an option.
Gavia Baker-Whitelaw, a staff writer for the Daily Dot, called him the “worst possible choice” because Harley Quinn is both Jewish and a survivor of domestic violence (by the Joker).
Film critic Rebecca Theodore said she hopes Will Smith will punch him “right in his gotdamn grill,” when he shows up on set.
