Even there is an official video made on it by the developers of the series i would like to give you my version on the topic which isn't easy unless you are a really big fan like me anyway you all already know who i am Jack Red so here we go.
In November 5, 1995 Twisted Metal was released on Playstation and being one of the first games made for the console and by SingleTrac the success was good enough to have it in a series.
In October 31, 1996 Twisted Metal 2 was made just a year later on the same console to date the best of the series and after this game was made SingleTrac was bought out by GT Interactive along with that they had a contractual dispute so Sony let 989 Studios have their hands on the series.
In October 31, 1998 Twisted Metal 3 989's first try with the series and the games was a disaster to the fans.
In October 31, 1999 Twisted Metal 4 their second and last try with the series was surprising better than it's predecessor but it's still inferior to the first two games.
In June 18, 2001 after the protest Sony brought back the original creators to make Twisted Metal Black it was the only game in the series to be rated M for mature anyway the fans were happy again.
In November 26, 2001 Twisted Metal Small Brawl was made and was the last Playstation game of the series it is noted that this game is the only one that has no cheat codes and was still popular even when it's aim at a younger crowd.
In September 27, 2002 an online version of Twisted Metal Black was released under the name Twisted Metal Black Online for being as popular as Twisted Metal 2.
In March 24, 2005 Twisted Metal Head On was released for PSP and considered a true Twisted Metal 3.
In February 5, 2008 Twisted Metal Head On Extra Twisted Edition brought Twited Metal Head On on PS2 packed with lost stuff from the series the big one being the never released sequel to Twisted Metal Black.
Twisted Metal 3 and 4 are no longer considered part of the canonical to the series and disregarded in newer games.
Twisted Metal 3 and 4 did became best sellers to the series before a protest started mainly Twisted Metal Alliance against 989 Studios and Sony to have the original creators back to the series.
