B.B. King (though I like Eric Clapton more)
Stevie Ray Vaughn (I'm not a fan of most of his songs but the man could play)
ZZ Top (love them, I aspire to play with their style)

I personaly think Jimi Hendrix and Stemage are the best.
If you do not know who Stemage is you should check out the Metroid Metal website. Every instrument in the songs is played by him, except for the few songs where it says otherwise.

I think overall Van Halen is the best guitarist. On pure technical skill I'd say John Petrucci or Steve Vai.

I mean Van Halen impresses virtuoso's. He created the tapping technique that about every guitarist uses today. This Stemage can imitate Metroid tunes. Fine, very good, but he's nowhere near the best. By the way. Who says the effects aren't added in the producing room? Or that his guitar is crammed with effects?

He also writes his own stuff too, so he doesn't just imitate. Plus, the Metroid songs he does is more than just imitating. If you were just to take a midi and and imitate it, you would get a pretty plain boring song. He puts a lot of his own stuff in there to make it more than just a repeat.

Just because Van Halen created a technique that doesn't show that he is the best guitarist. Anyone with a guitar can just experiment until they get a new interesting sound.

In my opinion Stemage is not the best anyway. I think Jimi Hendrix is better.
