The first in a possible series of reviews I'm planning, we're (re)visiting a mesmerizing adventure game that was released for several different platforms - most notably the PC (DOS) and the SNES - Out of this World.
Out of this World, also known as Another World, was a platformer/puzzle game with a heavy emphasis on story and atmosphere. The player takes control of a young scientist whose particle experiment has gone horribly wrong and has teleported him to a strange alien planet. Shortly after the player takes over, he is attacked by some beast and subsequently enslaved by the resident beings that somewhat resemble humans. The player's objective is to escape this realm with the help of a fellow captive.
The gameplay itself is based around rather simple platforming with lots of intricate puzzles and challenging combat segments. The player has infinite lives (you die a lot) and a multitude of intelligently placed checkpoints, so difficulty is more concentrated to individual sections and is based on strategy and timing rather than reflexes.
What makes Out of this World so memorable, though, is the dramatic nature of it - it really is like an interactive film. The game is very cinematic and linear - refreshing for its time and even more so now.
Anyway, yeah I like it. There's actually a re-release (www.anotherworld.fr/anotherworld_uk/page_reedition.htm) for Windows XP that boosts the resolution to 1280x800 pixels (for comparison, the original is in 320x200). Essentially, it looks amazing. There's a demo available at the link below.
High Resolution Collectors Edition Demo and Purchasing Info (among other stuff):

Thoughts on the review and/or game?
