Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Brief Synopsis – a young boy and his friend discover a mecha in a subterranean world and attempt to beat back the forces of the beast people to reclaim the surface world.
Art – Heavily stylized, you really get the feeling of watching a manga brought to life.
Animation – Smooth but quite a bit too hyperactive. You could find yourself missing a few scenes here and there during actual fights. I find myself rewinding more than once to catch what I missed.
Script – This was a surprise. The plot is deep and interesting. It actually goes farther than you’d expect. I thought I was watching another shallow mecha but there’s a lot to this show.
Character – There’s almost too much character to this show. Even the smallest support character is very well drawn out. I can’t think of a single useless character in the show.
Music – The music was very different but always great. It was like hearing Japanese renditions of bands I’ve listened to here in the States. It has a good rock edge to it.
Grip – It might be a bit too hyperactive for some people’s tastes but there’s no denying the light-hearted humor and hard action you find in this show. I found it to be incredibly gripping.
Likes – I enjoyed this show very much. The art, music, and characters were very cool and I found myself enjoying any time I spent watching them.
Dislikes – Why does every mecha have to get spacey and philosophical? Why can’t we just have item 1 bash item 2? No...we have to get all weird on the subject. It’s a giant mech! Let it beat up other mechs and we’ll be happy!
Scores:
Art – 4.5 Animation – 4 Script – 4.5
Characters – 5 Music – 5 Grip – 4
Overall – 4.5 / 5
Final Thoughts: I can’t believe that score! But I was looking back at the review and I can’t justify anything lower. It was a very, very good show and incredibly entertaining. I highly recommend this as most mechas leave you with a bad taste in your mouth by the end and this one doesn’t.
