Wolf’s Rain
Brief Synopsis – A pack of werewolves search for paradise in a bleak future
Art – Well, there’s nothing quite standout about the art in Wolf’s Rain. However, there’s nothing to complain about either.
Animation – Very fluid but not too complicated. You keep an eye on the action which is important. The animation shines best when working on the wolves. It really gives a sense of animal movement and activity. They really took care to animate the wolves well and it shows.
Script – While it may be slow moving the plot is constant. Meaning there isn’t a lot of down times. Nearly every episode is heading towards the ultimate goal which is good. They don’t waste an episode, which shows a commitment to the source material. The show is also very interesting.
Characters – Although the six or seven main characters are detailed and interesting the show could have spent more time developing the villains. You don’t really feel any connection to them but it doesn’t matter. The main characters are interesting and well-defined.
Music – Yoko Kanno does the soundtrack for this show and if you don’t know who she is you should look her up. She does fantastic work on this album. It might be one of the best anime soundtracks of all time. She really outdid herself this time.
Grip – Like I said before, the show is a little slow-moving but after devoting a little time to the show I found myself completely hooked. Still with a little more work on pacing it could have done better.
Likes – I enjoyed the final fight very much. Very climatic. Also the animation was very well balanced. I also enjoyed the lack of transformation animation. Leaving the transformation a mystery was a good move for the show.
Dislikes – I only have one complaint and it’s kind of moot. Werewolves as turning from human to full blown wolf, is a little...boring. Never been a fan of that ideal but that’s just me.
Scores:
Art – 4 Animation – 4.5 Script – 5
Characters – 4.5 Music – 5 Grip – 4
Overall – 4.5 / 5
Final Thoughts - Well, although I did enjoy this anime very much it can be slow moving but give it a chance. It's not everybody's cup of tea but it may just be yours if you give it a chance.
