Black Lagoon
Brief Synopsis – a young Japanese businessman joins a band of modern age pirates to assist in seedy underworld business
Art – The art style is fine. It’s certainly up to date but nothing extravagant. Of course that doesn’t leave anything to complain about either.
Animation – Good pacing. Top notch work. Again there’s nothing stand out about the animation in this either.
Script – Well, I understand that the manga isn’t finished yet. However, the anime is over as I understand it. That’s a shame because there really isn’t an end to this. I could see another season in this. If another season comes I’ll rewrite my review.
Character – There’s a sharp contrast in the primary characters. Supposedly the characters skirt the edges of light and dark with most of them firmly deposited in the dark but there are a few stuck in the light. The character work is good but again there’s nothing particularly stand out. They could’ve gone in more detail with the characters.
Music – The opening theme is quite good with a techno beat of sorts. It’s probably the only thing worth note in the series. I found the music to be disappointing aside from this. It was blah and didn’t really contribute to the series.
Grip – Despite its only average art, animation, plot and character work it actually has an intangible appeal. I blame the script and perhaps the offhand situations. It’s not a show you’ve seen before I’m pretty certain and for that alone it grabs your attention.
Like – The action is fantastic and the script is above average. Ordinarily I don’t like harsh language in the shows I watch because it feels like they force it but this show was very natural all the way through.
Dislikes – Well, it didn’t end strong and I kept feeling like the writer forgot the point.
Scores:
Art – 4 Animation – 4 Script – 3
Character – 4 Music – 3.5 Grip – 4.5
Overall: 4 / 5
Final Thoughts: Well, it’s not a bad anime. It’s actually quite entertaining despite its mediocrity. I would recommend at least giving it a try and seeing if it suits your tastes. Who knows? Maybe it’s exactly what you’ve been looking for.
