Elfen Lied
Brief Synopsis – A “biological weapon” breaks lose of her prison but suffers an injury that causes her to lapse between personalities.
Art – There was nothing particularly outstanding about the art in the show save for the opening. Of course there wasn’t anything poor about the art either.
Animation – Very well done. They showed a real sense of expertise in the animation for this show. Every action segment was done with care.
Script – It actually has a fair and shocking plot. Without giving too much away I would say that it hinges on a horror more than a sci-fi/action.
Character – Most of the characters are complex and the show takes care to go into detail on them for the most part. Paying ample attention to characters is one of the keys to a good anime and they got it right.
Music – Solid soundtrack with strong pieces but none of them as moving as Lilium (the opening number). Quite possibly the most beautiful song I’ve heard in anime period.
Grip – This anime isn’t for everyone. There are some traits that won’t suit everyone’s tastes which is perfectly fine. It’s good that there’s variety out there, but they may have selected their audience a little too perfectly.
Like – I know I already mentioned it but Lilium is one of my favorite songs out there and the opening artwork is stunning.
Dislikes – Nudity. No dancing around it. It forces you to ask the question: “what would it have been like without the nudity?” Would it have been so popular? Unfortunately there’s no way of knowing that. It’s tasteless in my opinion, but just to be clear if you’re the kind of person that gets off on the type of nudity they have in this then you need to see a psychiatrist. It’s not the kind of nudity you should be attracted to.
Scores:
Art – 3 Animation – 4 Script – 4
Character – 4.5 Music – 4 Grip – 2
Overall: 4/5
Final Thoughts: The problem with shows like this is you have to subtract those elements that make it so unique. I can see the draw for this show is select in the sense that it would attract people that would love to see incredibly dark and grim situations with naked girls. I’m a fan of the dark and grim but not so much the naked girls. That didn’t work for me, and “No” naked boys wouldn’t have worked either. I don’t think naked anything helps. I would know because I wrote this whole thing naked and I don’t think it’s any better.
