The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Brief Synopsis – A student’s life changes when he befriends a strange girl in his class
Art – Surprisingly there is a sense of art to this show. It’s just on the side but for shows like this art usually takes a backtrack to script and characters. It’s nice to see someone push the art envelope in this department.
Animation – Even with the better than average art they went ahead and made the animation very smooth. Probably one of the smoothest animes I’ve seen.
Script – The story is interesting and full of twists. The two main characters’ conversations are worth writing a book about. The main character (not Haruhi) is hilarious at times.
Character – The main character is stern and apathetic making him a great straight man and Haruhi is...complicated. Very complicated. Every other character is something you’ve seen before but when accented by these two it brings a new twist. For the two main characters alone this is deserving of a high score.
Music – Again a supposable comedy is showing exceptional skill in areas where most people totally skip. The music is very enjoyable and fits the situations very, very well.
Grip – This kind of depends on how you watch the show. For a first, this show is presented in two orders: A. Chronological order like most shows and B. Original order. This show wasn’t originally designed to be watched in chronological order which initially causes confusion and intrigue at the same time. Now the first episode (B.) isn’t very gripping. In fact it’s repulsing but if you watch that episode in A. order then it’s a lot more entertaining.
Like – I was actually more or less forced to watch this show twice. In order to get a good feel I had to watch it in A form and B form. Both were fun but I prefer B. I actually enjoyed this option.
Dislikes – The first episode when watching in B format is a terrible way to start it.
Scores:
Art – 4 Animation – 4 Script – 4.5
Character – 5 Music – 4 Grip – 5
Overall: 4.5/5
Final Thoughts: The fan base for this is huge! Once somebody sees the show it becomes like a second lifestyle. Kind of wishing it was longer then given the incredible level of fandom it generates. Just for the record: I am also a serious fan. I hope it didn’t affect my ability to review it though. You be the judge.
