Tropes Vs Women In Games

The Tropes vs Women in Video Games project aims to examine the plot devices and patterns most often associated with female characters in gaming from a systemic, big picture perspective. This series will include critical analysis of many beloved games and characters, but remember that it is both possible (and even necessary) to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of it's more problematic or pernicious aspects.

This video explores how the Damsel in Distress became one of the most widely used gendered clichés in the history of gaming and why the trope has been core to the popularization and development of the medium itself.

In this installment we look at "dark and edgy" side of the trope in more modern games and how the plot device is often used in conjunction with graphic depictions of violence against women

just reading regarding the second video people abused the flag function to get it removed.

With Video 2, She's comparing the violence against woman in games (only because they've become possessed, Start to change into a monster etc) to real life how it happens...........


even the myth its the woman that causes problem.....talk about being a feminist

it doesn't just happen between a Man against a woman, A woman can also do it too.

try and create more female hero characters, instead of the same old "damsel in distress" or now its mostly "Damsels in refridgerators"

There's more "you go girl" stereotypes than ever. You can't even play a game nowadays without some chick who shows up who kicks better butt than most guys just to show off "girl power". Gaming, like comics, has a mostly male audience so as more women play them you'll see more females in games. Hell they already took over television.

Men are protrayed far worse in the media. As stupid, bumbling morons, while women are protrayed as wiser and more down to Earth, it's all over sitcoms.

If they want to complain about women, they need to look at the male side too, or just shut up.

At least with the new Tomb Raider they didn't make it seem it was easy for Lara, They make her go through all sorts of things and including getting various injuries.

Tomb Raider was a very good game and an example of a cool chick in gaming, one of the best by far.

there's been couple of good ones without needing to create one and to have them kick a guys arse to have it all for "Girl Power" nonsense.

the type of clothing they wear.....like take this for Hunted: The Demons Forge

but i forgot she's talking about protagonists rather then a supporting.

Anything Platnium Games, Street Fighter, Suda 51 games, DoujinSoft, Korean MMO, etc. I'm also excited about the new Shinji Mikima game: The Evil Within.

I play western games, but I'm not that into them minus Batman Arkham games.

Well, Suda51 is a Japanese developer and Japanese culture is more open about sex and sexualized characters are the norm there in that culture. News magazines in Japan have so many naked women in them [Pink pages] that United Airlines was forced to ban them because of passenger complaints.
