Making this thread to help people troubleshoot their problems with games or things of the like. It's easier for me to give specific information and provide links here.
My first suggestion is always to USE GOOGLE!!! Tons of information can be found there easily and 99% of your problems will be solved in a minute if you just search and click one of the top results. Saves everyone a lot of time and you get better at it.
Post here after you've tried everything and you're completely stumped.
So let's have em'. Let's hear what's up.

I know what my problem is, but I don't what to do. I donwloaded Sonic Generations from Steam and it doesn't work. Gives me an error message:
Detected configurations don't match your hardware.
I tried deleting CFG files and reconfiging, tried using a different display via HDMI, etc.

I tried deleting CFG files and reconfiging, tried using a different display via HDMI, etc. Sonic Generations did that to me too. I believe the config files did it to me Question, did you install your own OS? Did you install the latest drivers for your PC? Did you get the message once you removed the .cfg files in the main directory, or is it just not starting?

I installed Windows 8 for free. But, it's not really installed since I bypassed the productkey insert. I still get the same message after deleting the config files.

Hmm, might want to look into that.
Did you try reinstalling the game or verifying game cache?

I was worried that if I uninstall it I'd hav eto purchase it again. I think it's a driver issue, Nvida ptimus often conflicts with some Sega games I heard.

Optimus eh? Should have said so. Did you try these fixes? pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Sonic_GenerationsIssues with Nvidia Optimus laptops
Method 1
Method 1: "Extend Desktop" Fix Open up Nvidia Control Panel. Click on "Manage 3D Settings" in the left side of the panel, and click "add". Select <path-to-game>\SonicGenerations.exe.
Select the option to force it to use Nvidia Graphics Card.
Now, go to your desktop. Right click on it, and select "Screen Resolution". Press Detect in this new Window. (If you can see two displays that are grayed out and named after your video cards, you're probably good to go.)
Choose your Nvidia card and select "Attempt to connect anyway on [VGA/HDMI]". When you found it, click apply.
Choose extended desktop and apply again. This will force-activate your discrete GPU.
Open the Sonic Config tool and see if your Nvidia card is present (it really should be), and of course, choose it. Now start Sonic, and it will probably work. If not, try running the Sonic Config again and this time deliberately select the non-Nvidia card. Try starting Sonic again. Some people have said that the now-force-activated Nvidia card took control anyway at this point, solving the problem.
Method 2
Use Method 2 only if Method 1 does not work
This fix is know to work on GeForce GT 555M, GeForce GT 540M, and GeForce GT 525M chipsets
Method 2: "Config File Edit" Fix[2]
(Revert any changes you made in Method 1, if necessary: alter the Screen Resolution settings to Show Desktop Only on 1, Apply, then pick Remove This Display on the NVIDIA screen, and Apply again). Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, go to "Manage 3D Settings" then "Program Settings". Add the sonicgenerations.exe executable and set the preferred graphics processor to be the NVIDIA one. Open "Control Panel" and look for the "Device Manager". Open it and expand the "Display Adapters" item. Make a note of the exact name given to your NVIDIA adapter (including the use of capitalization). To be sure you have the whole name, open the adapter's properties in the same menu, switch to the Details tab, select "Device Description" from the drop-down, and right-click, copy the displayed information.
Use the Sonic Generations configuration tool to configure the game to your liking and save.
Go to Sonic Generations installation folder. Edit GraphicsConfig.cfg.
The second line will be the name of your Intel adapter. Replace this with the name of your NVIDIA adapter as it appeared in Device Manager. You should see a line that says something like "MONITOR\LGD0292\{4d36e96e-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\ 0000" (this will vary depending on your exact setup, just look for line of this format), it should be the second to last line. Delete the contents of this line, so you are now left with a blank line. Here is a finished configuration file as an example:
Do not manually edit this file, use the configuration tool.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M \\.\DISPLAY1 1600.900.60 1 1 1 1 0 d7b78e66-4256-11cf-fd56-b424b7c2c535
1515474505 Save the edited file. You should now be able to play the game. It is crucial that when you go to device manager you copy it exactly as it says. The tested GTX 580M was followed by 5 spaces; the tested 540M and 525M by 2. Your own chip's details may vary. If DISPLAY1 does not work, it is recommended to try DISPLAYi, where i is the number of displays you currently have enabled.

Okay, I think I'm close. The configuration tool matces my graphics card only if I open it from my harddrive. If I open it from the steam app it goes back to my old display.

Probably trying to use your integrated card.
How does it feel to solve it and know more and more as you go along?

The more I solve the better I get lol. These problems tend to have little tweaks.
The problem seems to be the steam config is different from the configuration tool config settings. The tool detects my graphics card, but steam does not.

The tool detects my graphics card, but steam does not. When you tweaked them you keep getting the same thing? Does the game not let you do the config menu before it crashes? You're right about it needing just a few tweaks. You're still learning so it's cool.

Did you fix it on your laptop?
The issue seems t be that Steam will only run with intel HD. I disabled Intel HD's drivers and it didn't find Nvidia still. Told me no graphics cards were found. Plus it barely worked.
The steps they gave me does work up until the point with the monitors. I have a laptop. So, I might not be able to use dual monitor option. It only detects one monitor.

Yes I just removed the config files and it worked right away. I figure there would be an option to switch to only Nvidia. Try this: forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2223176

Some programmers don't account for certain things. You've said you have had problems with other games? Did you fix those? I'm wondering if it might be your installation that could be the problem. Windows 8 is bleh anyways. I'd go for 7 or maybe 10 over it.

It seems it's Sega games. Capxom games work fine with no prolem because they use Nvidia. Sega keeps using my display card: Intell and even when I disable it the it doesn't detect anything.

Yep, it's the game alright. I just reconfigured from the steam app and it saves my settings...except for the graphics card.

Did you try the last fix?

I have never dealt with gaming laptop issues before but couldnt the user just disable the integrated graphics in the bios? It would chew up battery life but it could solve the issue. Also try this and turn on high performance mode on power settings.
From NVIDIA Control Panel
3D Settings->Manage 3D Settings
Tab "Global setttings"
Preferred Graphics Processor
Select : High performance NVIDIA rocessor

He's saying it won't detect the Nvidia if he disables it.
I'll see what happens with his problem after he tries the last fix.
Yea, the gaming graphics settings could make the Nvidia configuration override the game configuration. That seems to be what the last fix was implying.

Try this: steamcommunity.com/app/71340/discussions/0/882966057113376826/?l=spanishRemember to update the game to version 4. I have solved the issue:
1- update sonic generations to version 4 2- run configtool (SETUP it to run with nvidia graphics from NVIDIA ControlPanel) 3- set everything as you want (but leaving INTEL HD as graphic) 4- save and exit configtool 5- Go to the Sonic Generations directory (in most cases "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sonic generations") and open GraphicsConfig.cfg in notepad or your preferred text editing software.
6- You should notice that the second line will be the name of your Intel adapter. Replace this with the name of your NVIDIA adapter exactly as it appeared in Device Manager. To do so enter into "details" and copy the name. It may contain spaces also (after the name) that matter!
7- You should see a line that says something like "MONITOR\LGD0292\{4d36e96e-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\ 0000" (this will vary depending on your exact setup, just look for line of this format), it should be the second to last line. Delete the contents of this line completely so you are left with a blank line. Here is my configuration file as an example:
Quote: ---- Do not manually edit this file, use the configuration tool. NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M \\.\DISPLAY1 1600.900.60 1 1 1 1 0 d7b78e66-4256-11cf-fd56-b424b7c2c535
1515474505 ----
8- run the game with Nvidia graphic card (SETUP from Nvidia CP like configtool)
REMEMBER THE PART OF UPDATING SONIC GENERATIONS TO V4 IS ESSENTIAL, without this nothing works!!

It should be fine now that I overlooked it in terms of version since it's the latest version and you automatically update.

I've edited the config file manually before. IT doesn't mention intel as my display since I changed it in Nvdia control panel.

Also feel free to look up some things and try them out and post them here; two heads are better than one. That way you come to a solution faster. Part of troubleshooting is being diligent.
