Berserk Author Kentaro Miura Supervising Koei's Berserk Game, Aims to Keep The Game At a 17+ Rating and More
The new Gamer JP interview with Koei Tecmo's President Hisashi Koinuma about the upcoming Berserk title has been translated, and he's given a couple of interesting bits of information about ratings and Kentaro Miura's involvement with the title. Additionally, the interview seems to hint that the game may not have a base takeover system like the usual Warriors titles have. You can check out the translated interview below!
Was your intention to create a game to go along with this year's upcoming Berserk anime?
Koinuma: The higher ups and I have actually discussed about creating a Berserk game quite a while before the anime had begun its concept. Although, much later we were approached by the Berserk anime's production team to ask if we could create a game based on Berserk as well. Personally as a very big Berserk fan I began looking into making a Berserk game a reality. I talked with various members of staff and as Berserk fans themselves they were all delighted to start on the project.
We were unsure when to announce the game itself as Mr. Miura had not released a new volume in three years and we always put an announcement of an IP's game on the outer slip of a manga book. Since we can't do that, we decided E3 was the closest event to announce it haha.
So you planned on a worldwide reveal?
Koinuma: We at Koei tend to reveal our games on a global scale like we did with our previous manga to game adaptation of "Attack on Titan". I feel it's best we reveal those types of games that way.
Is Mr. Miura interested in the game adaptation of his creation?
Koinuma: Since we announced Koei will be working on a Berserk Warriors, Mr. Miura has sent us a New Years Postcard every single year haha. Mr. Miura is a man grounded in reality and he really wanted the Warriors feeling to remain, but with a Berserk flair, he's even supervised the creation of the game from the very start.
Will the game's story be following alongside the manga's story?
Koinuma: As we did with our "Fist of the North Star" and "Attack on Titan" games, we like to create a story that fans will love yet newcomers can also come and enjoy as if they picked up the very first volume. Berserk Warriors will begin from the Golden Age whereas the anime will pick up from after Guts became a Black Swordsman.
What part of the story are you planning to develop up to?
Koinuma: We plan on cramming a lot of the upcoming anime into the game.
How is development going?
Koinuma: Development is going smoothly.
Will there be plenty of playable characters?
Koinuma: As it's a Warriors game we planned on a number of different playable characters but please wait for more information in the upcoming months.
Will there be any original "Apostles" featured in the game?
Koinuma: The game will feature a whole lot of Berserk and we plan to keep to the story. We never considered adding anything extra into the game.
What CERO rating are you aiming for?
Koinuma: Our policy at Koei is that we will never release a Z rating (18+) game and like "Fist of the North Star" before we managed to get a CERO D (17+) rating.
Will there be anything cut out due to problems etc?
Koinuma: Nothing will be cut. We had to cut a bit in the "Attack on Titan" game, but to be fair, the enemies were giants and that was a difficult task. With Berserk, since there are mainly humans or monsters, anything that may seem difficult we will push through and challenge ourselves in order to make it happen.
Will Gut's arm etc be depicted correctly in game?
Koinuma: Guts will be able to fight with his artificial arm and how you will be able to fight...well.. just wait till we announce it!
Will it have a shaded toon type style similar to "Attack on Titan"?
Koinuma: *picks up main visual cut out* We created this especially for the E3 reveal but we are still brushing it up so there is a chance that it could slightly change.
Any hints of an Online mode?
Koinuma: I can't speak about that at this time, our main focus is on creating an amazing Berserk experience with the story.
Will you be taking over bases similar to the regular Warriors games?
Koinuma: Since that does not happen in the Berserk story, we are instead making it more Berserk-like by making the battles resemble the original material.
Will this game also be made available on Steam?
Koinuma: Koei has always wanted to put out games on multiple platforms and we understand there are a lot of gamers who use Steam and so we plan on considering it an option .
Will the game be released in America on the Xbox One?
Koinuma: We are currently considering Steam and other platforms for Japan at this time.

The one-against-one thousand Warriors series and the uniquely gruesome battle series Berserk unite. Wield a grand sword bigger than yourself and slice the enemy in two, kill and crush with “Kill-Crush Action” overflowing with power. Experience the overwhelming destructive power of breaking a siege with a single swing.
A Grand and Deep Story

You’ll be able to relive the grand world of Berserk. These characters, who posses a variety of special skills, will showcase a number of unique actions in battle. Additionally, the major characters will feature the same voice actors as from the anime movie and July 2016-due television anime.
It’s also worth pointing out that first-run copies of the game in Japan come with a download code for a “Wet Casca” costume.

Koei Tecmo’s Berserk launches this fall in the west
Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force-developed Berserk game will launch physically for PlayStation 4, and digitally for PS Vita and PC via Steam this fall in North America and Europe, the company announced.
■ Overview
Slash and Smash Action!
In this work, the action of cutting through hundreds of enemies, fundamental to the Warriors series, is fused together with the dark and gruesome atmosphere of the world of “Berserk“, making various heretofore unseen acts possible, such as using a giant man-sized sword to cut enemies in half, as well as smash or send them flying with the “Cleaving” and “Smashing” attacks. Revel in the astounding destructive power capable of cutting through multiple enemies with one blow!
Extensive and Profound Story!
In this game, in addition to the well-known and popular “Golden Age Arc”, you will also be able to join Guts and his newest companions on his journey of revenge through “The Hawk of the Millennium Arc”. Additionally, the extensive story includes an impressive amount of artwork, including footage from the actual animation movie trilogy and new, original scenes portraying more detailed interactions between the members of the Band of the Hawk and other characters.
Diverse Character Selection!
In addition to the main hero of the story, Guts, you can choose to play as any of a number of characters from all the different parts of the story. Every one of these characters possesses a distinctive set of skills and characteristics to ensure the variety of gameplay is consistent with the world of “Berserk“.
Furthermore, to deepen immersion into the story, the same familiar cast of voice actors from the movie trilogy and the new animation series were invited to take part in this project.
■ Story
The Golden Age Arc
This story is set in a time of chaos, in a land where the Midland Kingdom and the Chuder Empire have been locked in a widespread war for over one hundred years.
During one battle, a lone mercenary, Guts, attracts the attention of the mercenaries of the Band of the Hawk, and is ambushed by some of them on the road.
After losing in a duel to the leader of the Hawks, Griffith, Guts is forced to join their band, where he acquires many new comrades, including a woman named Casca, a Unit Commander in the band.
With Guts fighting as the Raiders Captain, the Band of the Hawk continues to come off victorious in all of their battles, and finally earns recognition from the King of Midland himself.
Fighting now under the Midland banner, the Band raids a castle occupied by a legendary swordsman and rumored immortal named Nosferatu Zodd. Zodd defeats both Guts and Griffith, but in the last moment he notices the Crimson Behelit that Griffith wears around his neck, and leaves without killing them.
The Band of the Hawk continues to gain fame on the battlefield, and in the end, using only 5000 men fighting with their backs to the river, manages to capture the impregnable Fortress of Doldrey. This victory brings the end to the war between Midland and Chuder.
Though Guts is praised as a hero, he chooses to leave the Band. He believes that only in doing so will he become worthy of being a friend to Griffith. The shock of Guts’ leaving forces Griffith’s hand, and he spends the night in the Princess’s chambers. As a result, the King of Midland, furious, throws Griffith in the dungeon and gives orders to hunt down the Band of the Hawk as traitors of the state.
A year later, Guts, having learned of the troubles of the Band of the Hawk, rushes back to help the outlawed remnants of the Hawks rescue Griffith. However, they are too late. All the torture had left Griffith in a condition that allows for no hope of recovery. And it is this despair that activates the Crimson Behelit…
To fulfil his own ambition, Griffith chooses to be reborn as “Femto”, one of the Five Angels…
and offers in exchange the lives of his devoted comrades and followers, the lives of the entire Band of the Hawk…
The Band of the Hawk, sacrificed for the sake of Griffith ambition, is slaughtered by the monsters called Apostles, with only two of those present there left alive – Guts who has lost his left arm and right eye, and Casca who suffered a mental breakdown and became as helpless as a child.
In order to avenge his companions, Guts decides to wage a war against all of the Apostles and Griffith. He sets out on a solitary road of revenge, dressed in black armor with a giant sword Dragon Slayer on his back…
■ Characters
Guts
Guts is a wandering mercenary, who, after being defeated by Griffith, joins the Band of the Hawk. In that band, he earns the status of Captain of the Hawks’ Raiders. After the war ends, he leaves the Band of the Hawk to find his own dream and to become the equal of Griffith.
Griffith
The leader of the Band of the Hawk, a band of mercenaries feared as the Grim Reapers of the Battlefield. He is a young man of striking handsomeness and possesses a charisma that enchants people around him. His dream is to acquire his own kingdom.
Koei Tecmo’s Berserk delayed to October 27 in Japan

Here are characters that are conformed: Serpico (voiced by Kazuyuki Okitsu) A thin young man. As an easygoing person, he gives off an impression of weakness, however he is extremely skilled in battle. As a follower of Farnese de Vandimion, he vows his absolute loyalty to her, and when she leaves the Holy Iron Chain Knights to follow Guts, he follows her without a second thought. Schierke (voiced by Chiwa Saito) A young girl and disciple of the Mansion of the Spirit Tree witch Flora. She supports her allies through the use of a variety of magic. At first she had distrust towards humans, but she matures as she continues her journey with Guts and company. Zodd (voiced by Kenta Miyake) A legendary mercenary known as “The Immortal Nosferatu Zodd.” He is an Apostle who has roamed the battlefields for hundreds of years in search of formidable enemies. He has an interest in Guts, who wounded him, and leaves him an ominous prophecy. ■ System Unleash Hidden Strength Some characters can “transform,” which changes their appearance and improves their attack power and attack speed. By unleashing stronger than normal actions, you’ll be able to mow down the a horde of enemies with a single attack. Source: gematsu

Berserk Producer On Staying True To Its Brutal Source Material
Koei Tecmo’s upcoming Omega Force-developed Berserk game takes on the dark themes and brutal storyline of Kentaro Miura’s manga series. With a planned release in North America, as well as Japan and Europe, producer Hisashi Koinuma shares with Siliconera how the team is working to deliver a Warriors-style game that remains faithful to its source material.
How did the idea for Berserk Musou start?
Hisashi Koinuma, Producer: It started with an offer from the anime production committee asking if we could work together on Berserk since they were launching a new anime season. I personally have been a longtime reader of the Berserk manga, and there are readers of the manga among the game directors at Koei Tecmo, so having a degree of personal interest among the key staff led to the decision to give it a go.
In an earlier interview with Gamer.ne.jp, it was mentioned that Koei Tecmo will not release a CERO Z rated game so Berserk would have to be CERO D. Given how graphic Berserk is when it comes to violence and subject material, how do you play to keep the game true to fans? What boundaries are you planning to push to make this the “most brutal Musou in history?”
I believe we do not necessarily need to force ourselves to make a CERO Z rated title in order to stay true to the source material of Berserk. Similar to Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage, we are finding ways to exercise constraints in order to maintain a CERO D rating while still pushing boundaries. Japan is strict on blood and gore effects while North America is strict on sexual themes, so ratings and regulations differ depending on the region, and we know that adjustments need to be made due to these regional circumstances.
Is there any content in particular you are concerned about that might make the game difficult to release in the West?
We have some concerns because certain content is crucial in order to fully represent the original story, so we are trying our best to implement that content in a way that doesn’t cross any lines.
How does the Berserk game tie into the series? Will there be tie-ins or characters from the new anime series?
The game itself covers the original story of the Golden Age Arc through the Falcon of the Millenium Empire Arc. We don’t have any plans on tie-ins, but since the game covers a broad scope of the original narrative, there might be characters included in future anime versions if the anime series continues.

So I take it you plan on picking this up when it launches? That is really going to depend on how much money I have on My account along with what I plan on getting. I just placed in $66 for Diesel Guns (assuming Diesel Guns will process which barely got has its goals), and I plan on getting a second PS Vita because the method of switching accounts is such a pain because you have to refurbish (like starting from fresh) to switch, My original one is under My Hong Kong account since DOAX3 was getting released.

Wow you're doing this gaming thing big. How do you like your Vita? I mainly did that just so they get as much support as possible, especially for a game I would want it to success not give them like $2 which the majority of backers gave. I mainly enjoy the games that are on the Vita, I haven't played as much (unless if I'm playing DOAX3 & some Touki Denshou Angel Eyes).
